He finished fourth in the Saskatchewan AAA Midget League scoring race in the 2006-07 season with 27 goals and 70 points in 41 games as a member of the Saskatoon AAA Contacts.
2007-08: Schenn led the Wheat Kings and all WHL rookies in scoring this season, racking up 28 goals and 43 assists for a total of 71 points in 66 games in his freshman campaign. He captured two gold medals while skating for Team Canada at two major international events in the spring and summer. He was a member of the gold medal winning Team Western at this year’s World Under-17 Challenge in London and was chosen as tournament All-Star forward and led the prestigious event in scoring. He was one of three 16-year olds on Brandon’s roster, teaming up with fellow rookies Scott Glennie and Matt Calvert to form one of the highest scoring rookie lines in league history (193 combined points). He had a career-high five point game vs. Red Deer on Feb. 1. He was named the team’s Rookie of the Year and Most Popular Player, as well as the 2008 WHL Rookie of the Year.
2008-09: As one of Western Canada’s premier 17-year old player, a lot was expected from the center as he entered his second season with the Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL), and he didn’t disappoint. Improving on his numbers from last season, Schenn recorded a career-high 88 points (32g+56a) in 70 games. He likes to scrap and saw his PIM nearly double from last season, racking up 82 minutes in the box. Registered another eight goals and 18 points in 12 playoff games. Drafted at the 2009 NHL Draft by the Los Angeles Kings (1st round, 5th overall).
2009-10: Schenn posted 34 goals and 65 assists in 59 games with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL last season. In the playoffs, he posted 8 goals and 11 assists in 15 games. Schenn made his NHL debut with the Kings on November 26th, where he logged 19 shifts and 12:31 in ice time.
2010-11: Schenn opened the season with the Los Angeles Kings, appearing in eight games before being returned to Brandon (WHL). He led all scorers at the 2011 U20 World Junior Championship while playing for Canada. After a WHL trade deadline deal, Schenn finished the junior season with Saskatoon and then joined the Kings' AHL affiliate Manchester. In eight games with the Kings he had 2 assists and was -1, averaging just more than 11 minutes of ice time. Schenn played in two games with Brandon before joining Team Canada and scored 1 goal with 3 assists. In seven games for the silver-medal winning Canada squad, he scored 8 goals with 10 assists and was +10 before suffering a separated shoulder. Once healthy, he joined the WHL Blades and in 27 games scored 21 goals with 32 assists and was +18 with 23 PMs. In ten playoff games for Saskatoon he scored 6 goals with 5 assists and was -7 with 14 PMs. Schenn played with Manchester in the last seven games of the regular season, scoring 3 goals with 4 assists, and was +3 with 4 PMs. In five AHL playoff games he scored 1 goal with 3 assists and was +2. Schenn was acquired by Philadelphia from the Los Angeles Kings in a multi-player trade in June 2011.
Talent Analysis
Schenn, along with regular linemates Scott Glennie and Matt Calvert (CBJ), spent the first half of the season being shifted with a variety of Wheat Kings forwards in an effort to create scoring balance. During the second half, Schenn elevated his offensive output and was a key contributor to the Wheaties push for first place in the WHL’s East Division in the Eastern Conference. A smooth skater with good acceleration, Schenn demonstrates a knack for finding open ice. He does not hesitate to rough things up and has the size to dominate in traffic. He is an above-average passer of the puck.
Future
Schenn was dealt to the Philadelphia Flyers prior to the 2011 NHL Draft.
