History

2005-06: Doughty turned heads during his rookie year with the Storm.  Playing as a 15 year old, Doughty finished in the top 20 amongst OHL rookies in scoring with 33 points (five goals, 28 assists).  He was the second highest scoring rookie defenseman in the entire OHL, trailing Mark Katic by just one point.  He also led all Guelph defensemen in scoring.  Doughty also had a remarkable post season.  In 14 games, Doughty recorded 13 points, all on assists.  His 13 points were good enough to make him the sixth leading defensive scorer in the entire OHL.  He was also the only rookie to crack the top 20 in scoring amongst defenseman.  He was the second leading scorer amongst all rookies in the playoffs.

2006-07: Doughty followed up his impressive rookie campaign with a stellar sophomore season.  He led the Storm in points with 74 and assists with 53 to go along with his 21 goals.  He finished second in points and assists amongst OHL defensemen and was in the top five in goals.  He was named to the Western Conference All-Star team for the OHL All-Star Classic.

2007-08: Doughty has continued his momentum from his first two years with the Storm, even though his production tailed off.  He participated in the Canada-Russia Summit Series in route to being named no. 2 overall by NHL Central Scouting in both their preliminary and mid-term rankings.  He was also a very important member on Team Canada’s gold medal winning squad a the 2008 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships.

Talent Analysis

Doughty is very good at taking time and space away from the opposition skaters. He uses his speed very well and is very creative with the puck.  Doughty is as close to the complete package as a defenseman can be - solidly built, with tremendous offensive ability and high hockey intelligence, only missing out in size when compared to former first overall pick Eric Johnson.  Those attributes, combined with his patience and confidence, make Doughty a future franchise defenseman.

Future

Doughty is a very talented offensive defenseman.  He has made tremendous improvements in his defensive game, but more progress needs to be made.  He may be pressed into duty as early as the 2008-09 season as the Los Angeles roster has multiple openings for a prospect defenseman.  Regardless of when Doughty makes it to Los Angeles, the expectation is one of a two-way defenseman and a franchise cornerstone.
