History

2006-07: Cowen was the first overall selection in the 2006 WHL Bantam Draft. In six regular season games, he was +4 with two points. He appeared in all six playoff games in 2007. In 41 regular season games with the Saskatoon Contacts of the SMAAAHL in 2006-07, Cowen scored six goals and added another 22 assists, in addition to 103 PIM. He played for the sixth place Team Saskatchewan at the 2007 Canadian Winter Games.

2007-08: In his first full season with the Spokane Chiefs (WHL), Cowen recorded 18 points (4+14). He recorded his first career goal on Oct. 5 at Tri-City. His empty net goal vs. Kitchener clinched the Cheifs Memorial Cup Championship. He served as an Alternate Captain for Canada’s gold medal winning Under-18 team at the 2008 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament. He helped Team West win the bronze medal at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. He finished the tournament with seven helpers in six games and was named the Player of the Game for Team West three times. He was named the Chiefs Rookie of the Year and Western Conference Scholastic Player of the Year in 2007-08. His +28 led all rookie defensemen this season. Added a goal and three assists in 21 playoff games.

2008-09: The towering blue-liner saw his numbers improve this season. In 48 games with Spokane (WHL) he recorded seven goals and 21 points. He plays disciplined hockey and the proof is in his 45 PIM.

Talent Analysis

Cowen is huge by junior standards and has become comfortable with imposing his size on opponents. Mobile for a player of his size, he is capable of contributing more offensively. His reach and strength enable him to dominate opponents physically in junior hockey. Spokane Chiefs management continues to marvel at Cowen’s commitment and work ethic. He has been paired with veteran Jared Spurgeon (NYI) on the Chiefs’ blueline for most of his two seasons in the WHL.

Future

The hockey world will ask questions about Cowen’s knee until he is able to prove he has overcome the effects of the injury. He is underrated offensively, but in today’s NHL, he is likely destined to play a shut-down role with his size, mobility and reach. It will take time for Cowen to adjust to the speed in the NHL, but his Adam Foote-like grit will serve him well. A healthy Cowen is destined to become a top-four defenseman in the NHL. With maturity and continued development, he can exceed this expectation.
