Last Thursday, forward Andrej Nestrasil was claimed on waivers from the Detroit Red Wings, the team that drafted him in 2009, by the Carolina Hurricanes. Nestrasil wasted little time in making an impact with his new team, scoring his first NHL goal in his first game with the Hurricanes in what ended up being a 4-3 loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night. The Montreal Canadiens‘ prized off-season signing started paying dividends on Thursday night. Forward Jiri Sekac, a native of the Czech Republic who starred in the KHL last season before being signed by the Habs back in July, scored his first NHL goal in his team’s 6-4 win over the Boston Bruins in the Habs’ home opener. The race to claim the mantle of first overall selection for the 2015 NHL Draft has officially begun in earnest with the start of the 2014-15 season. The main combatants for that honor, Erie Otters center Connor McDavid and Boston University forward Jack Eichel, have both seen game action within the past week and will be closely scrutinized by NHL scouts from now through April or May.
