Senators’ Hamel named player of the week

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … The American Hockey League announced today that Binghamton Senators left wing Denis Hamel has been named the Rbk/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending December 2, 2007. Hamel scored five goals in three games as the Senators improved to 5-0-1-1 in their last seven contests.

Hamel scored once in a 4-3 shootout loss at Hershey on Wednesday night, then picked up a pair of goals in a 4-0 win over Bridgeport on Friday. Hamel tallied two more goals, including his second consecutive game-winner, to help the Senators to an 8-5 win over Norfolk on Saturday. The Binghamton captain now has 10 goals in his last eight games and five multiple-goal games on the season.

In recognition of his achievement, Hamel will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Senators home game.

Hamel leads the American Hockey League with 16 goals and has added six assists for 22 points in 22 games in 2007-08. A two-time AHL All-Star, Hamel was the co-winner of the Willie Marshall Award as the AHL’s leading goal-scorer in 2005-06, when he tallied 56 goals for the Senators. The native of Lachute, Que., has notched 227 goals and 194 assists for 421 points in 529 career AHL games, and has also tallied 31 points (19g, 12a) in 192 career NHL contests with Ottawa, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Buffalo.
