Heading into the 2014 World Junior Championship, it was thought that this tournament could serve as a true launching pad for Canadian hockey prodigy, Connor McDavid. Instead, McDavid blended in with the rest of his Team Canada teammates through the first three games of the tournament, much to the disappointment of some observers.
But McDavid decided to add just a bit of fuel to the hype machine during his country's important preliminary round match-up with the USA. With the game tied at 1 in the third period, McDavid stuffed in his own rebound from in tight to give Canada a lead it would not relinquish, with the Canadians going on to win the game, 3-2. The win also allowed Canada to leapfrog over Team USA to take the top seed in their grouping.
McDavid plays for the Erie Otters of the OHL, and is currently considered the top prospect for the 2015 NHL Draft. The Newmarket, ON native was firmly ensconced among the top 10 scorers in the OHL until he departed for the WJC in Malmo, Sweden. McDavid currently is sporting a stat-line of 12 goals and 38 assists for 50 points in 31 games, good for 16th overall.
McDavid met with the media after the win over the USA, a portion of which is captured in this Hockey's Future video.
