Team Russia took advantage of some penalty problems enndured by the USA to pull out a 5-3 win in their quarterfinal match at the 2014 World Junior Championship. The win sends the Russians on to the semi-finals where they'll meet the winner of the Sweden-Slovakia contest.
Heading into the playoff round, Russia's leading scorer was Mikhail Grigorenko, a prospect of the Buffalo Sabres. So, it was fitting that the big center would open the scoring for Russia in this game, putting in a rebound on the doorstep of USA goaltender Jon Gillies to make the score 1-0.
After the quarterfinal win, Grigorenko now shares the team scoring lead with two other players at seven points apiece. He has scored four goals and chipped in three assists while sporting a +6 rating for the tournament.
