BOUCHERVILLE, Monday, February 25, 2008 – Rimouski Océanic forward Michael Frolik and Moncton Wildcats goaltender Nicola Riopel today were named the TELUS offensive and defensive players of the week for the period extending from February 18 to 24.
In three contests, Frolik contributed two goals, including a game-winner, as well as five helpers while registering a +5 rating. He played arguably his best game of the week last Wednesday as he collected two points, including the overtime winner, in a 3-2 decision over the Chicoutimi Saguenéens. Frolik was named the game’s first star. The Océanic forward has accumulated 56 points in only 37 games so far this season.
Brad Marchand (4-1-5) of Halifax, Benjamin Breault (2-3-5) of Baie-Comeau and Dean Ouellet (3-2-5) of Cape Breton were also considered.
The defensive player of the week award goes to Moncton Wildcats goaltender Nicola Riopel. In three games, Riopel helped the Wildcats collect five points in the standings thanks to two wins and one shootout loss. He maintained a 1.93 goals-against-average and .941 save percentage while facing an average of 32 shots per game. The Wildcats backstop played his best game of the week on Wednesday, stopping 26 shots in a 2-1 overtime win over the Eastern division-leading Sea Dogs. Moncton is only two points behind the PEI Rocket for the final playoff spot. The two teams are scheduled to meet twice before season’s end.
Alex Lamontagne (2-3-5; +4) of Cape Breton, Travis Fullerton (1-1; 122 MIN; 1.47 GAA; .954 SAV %) of Saint John and Timo Pielmeier (1-1; 125 MIN; 1.44 GAA; .954 SAV %) of St. John’s were also considered.
