RISING
Ian Schultz, C
Calgary Hitmen (WHL)
Height: 6.01.2 Weight: 179
Schultz has been a pleasant surprise this season with the top-ranked Hitmen. He is very hard-nosed and tough in all aspects of the game. His skating is average and he needs to increase his first few steps and gain a top gear. He is not afraid to drive the net and keep a net-front presence. Plays in all situations and has played on the top line all season. Has the tools to develop into a good power forward in the next few seasons. Is a prototypical pro prospect and a tough WHL prospect.
Corey Trivino, C
Stouffville Spirit (OPJHL)
Height: 6.01 Weight: 170
Left-handed center, has a slight frame. A good skater with a fluid stride, is quick with very good acceleration - has an ability to pull away from defender. Has good puck skills - uses his stick well along the boards when battling for loose pucks - often gaining possession. Read the play well and jumps into holes effectively. Currently leads OPJHL in playoff scoring with 19 points in 11 games. Plays in all situations including the point during the PP.
Michael Stone, RD
Calgary Hitmen (WHL)
Height: 6.02.5 Weight: 200
Stone is gaining more confidence as he matures as a hockey player. His game has improved as the season has gone on. Was thrown into the fire early in the year with the injuries to the Hitmen defense core. Plays alongside Karl Alzner in many situations including PP and PK, a compliment for a young d-man on a very strong team with a great d-core. His draft stock is rising rapidly and could rise higher if the Hitmen make a long run into the playoffs.
Jake Allen, G
St. John's Fog Devils (QMJHL)
Height: 6.01.5 Weight: 175
St. John's Fog Devils goaltender Jake Allen was named the TELUS defensive player of the week for the period extending from Feb. 25 to Mar. 2. Natural athlete, great mental toughness, easy to coach, great work ethic, progressed all season. Handles puck well, square to puck, good size, needs to challenge shooter better. Good anticipation. Active stick. Playing with a lot more confidence and poise than early in the season. Will improve as his co-ordination improves.
Jacob De Serres, G
Seattle Thunderbirds
Height: 6.01.5 Weight: 195
Stands up well with good size. Reacts well and controls rebounds. Draft sleeper. We have heard whispers of teams keeping tight-lipped about him hoping to steal him. Sharing the goaltender duties with Finn Riku Helenius (TB).
Kruise Reddick, C
Tri-City Americans (WHL)
Height: 5.08.2 Weight: 165
Reddick has been a pleasant surprise not only for the Americans but also for the entire WHL. His best attribute is his consistency. He is a speedy skater and despite his small stature he will work in the trenches.
Tyler Myers, RD
Kelowna Rockets (WHL)
Height: 6.07.2 Weight: 204
Myers has greatly improved his overall game since the start of the season. Similar to Zdeno Chara only better skater at same age. Still growing, very good mobility for size. Huge wing span with active stick. Good feet/pivots, playing a lot more physical than early in the season. Playing with more confidence. Played forward until three years ago.
Patrick Cusack, RD
Lewiston Maineiacs (QMJHL)
Height: 6.01 Weight: 194
Draft wildcard. Arguably Lewiston's most consistent and reliable d-men all year. Conditioning-wise he's matured from last year and now realizes the importance of training smart and consistently. Has a lot of work to do with strength and core but is coming along. Good kid in the locker room and has handled his bigger role very well all year.
Brent Regner, RD
Vancouver Giants (WHL)
Height: 6.00 Weight: 180
Has really improved under Coach Don Hay. Was ranked by ISS last year but he went undrafted. That should change this time around. Playing on top pairing with Jon Blum (NAS). Handles the 2-on-1 well. Uses his partner well. Understands the game.
FALLING
Mark Barberio, LD
Moncton Wildcats (QMJHL)
Height: 6.02.2 Weight: 201
Doesn't initiate contact or finish any checks. Foot speed is still average. Could use his strength to lean on the opposition a little more. Can be lackadaisical with the puck.
Jesse Brown, LW
Kingston Frontenacs (OHL)
Height: 6.02 Weight: 180
Showed glimpses of what he is capable of, though still not for a full game. Good size and frame but does not use it - very little in the way of physical play. Skating is OK. Still takes too many shifts off.
Jason Missiaen, G
Peterborough Petes (OHL)
Height: 6.07 Weight: 193
Big goalie who goes down a lot. At times appears to have trouble finding pucks that hit him and then fall to his feet. Very limited playing time this season. Looks awkward at times moving around the net.
