Forward Travis Konecny is one of a handful of Team Canada youngsters getting a taste of IIHF U18 World Championship action at an earlier age than might normally be the case. While many of the players taking part in this tournament are in their draft year, Konecny won't be eligible for the draft until the 2014-15 season.
So far, though, Konecny has fit right in and is taking a regular shift for Canada as they defend their gold medal from last year's tournament. Although he was held pointless in the opening win over Sweden, he did notch a goal against Germany in Canada's 5-2 win in their second game of this U18 tournament.
Konecny plays for the Ottawa 67's of the OHL. The top pick in the 2013 OHL Priority Selection lived up to his billing this season, leading the 67's in scoring with 26 goals and 44 assists for 70 points in 63 games. A strong showing at the U18 tournament could boost his already high draft stock for the 2015 NHL Draft.
Konecny spoke with Hockey's Future following his country's win over Sweden, a conversation captured in this HF video.
