After opening a 3-1 lead in the first period, Team USA cruised to their fifth gold medal in the past six years at the 2014 edition of the IIHF U18 World Championship. Forward Auston Matthews was the scoring hero for the U.S. as he scored two goals and added an assist in the win over the Czech Republic.
Turning in a quiet but effective performance for Team USA at this U18 was forward Shane Gersich. The Chaska, MN native didn't register any points in seven games, but other players on the USA roster were looked to for offense. Gersich instead provided some energy and defensive play in a third- and fourth-line role for Team USA, and filled that role capably at this tournament.
Gersich is another of the U.S. NTDP U18 products that competed for Team USA at this event. In 26 2013-14 games against USHL competition, Gersich scored eight goals and added eight assists while finishing with a +8 rating.
Hockey's Future spoke with Gersich following Team USA's gold medal win, a conversation that can be viewed in this HF video.
