Wildcats’ Riopel named ADT CHL Goaltender of the Week

Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that Nicola Riopel of the Moncton Wildcats is the ADT CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending February 8.  Riopel won three games with one shutout posting a goals-against-average of 0.67 and a save percentage of .975.

Riopel started his week on Thursday at home to the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies where he made 21 saves in the 6-1 win.  His best game of the week was on Saturday when the Wildcats hosted the Chicoutimi Sagueneens.  Riopel earned second star of the game honours with his fifth shutout of the season turning aside all 23 shots fired his way.  Riopel was sensational to finish the week on Sunday on the road in Saint John where he was recognized as first star of the game for making 33 saves to beat the Sea Dogs 3-1.

Riopel, a 19-year-old from St-Pie-de-Bagot, QC is in his third full QMJHL season with the Wildcats.  Riopel leads the league with 35 wins including five shutouts, which is tied for the top mark in the QMJHL.  His goals-against-average of 1.90 and save percentage of .935 are both best amongst all goaltenders.  Riopel was also the recipient of this award for the week ending October 26.

Mark Guggenberger of the Kelowna Rockets represents the href=”/teams/whl”>WHL nominee for the award.  The Richfield Minnesota native went 3-0-0-0 with a goals-against-average of .970 and a save percentage of .947.  Peter Di Salvo of the OHL’s Barrie Colts won his two games where he was named second star and third star posting a goals-against-average of 1.94 and a save percentage of .952 with 83 saves.
