Vancouver Giants Jon Blum named Boston Pizza WHL Player of the Week

CALGARY, AB. – The BOSTON PIZZA WHL Player of the Week is defenceman Jonathon Blum of the Vancouver Giants. 

Blum picked up three points, scoring two goals and an assist to go with a +2 rating in two games over the last week, helping the Vancouver Giants jump out to a 2-0 series lead over the Spokane Chiefs in the 2009 Kal Tire WHL Western Conference Semi-Finals best-of-seven series.
 
On Friday, April 3rd, the Vancouver Giants (1) hosted the Spokane Chiefs (4) for game one of their second round series at the Pacific Coliseum.  Blum picked up an assist on the game winning goal as the Giants downed the Chiefs 3-1 to take a 1-0 series lead.  Game two of the series went the next evening, Saturday, April 4th, in Vancouver.  Blum netted two goals in the Giants 4-1 victory over Chiefs and was named the games 1st Star.
 
E: 10pt; LETTER-SPACING: -0.25pt”>The 2009 Kal Tire Western Conference Semi-Final now shifts to Spokane, WA with the Giants leading the series 2-0.  Games three and four are set in the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena on Tuesday, April 7th and Wednesday, April 8th at 7:00 pm PT.
 
Blum, from Rancho Santa Margarita, California, is currently playing his 19 year old season with the Vancouver Giants.  The first round – 23rd overall selection of the Nashville Predators at the 2007 NHL Entry Draft has spent four years leading the defence corps for the Giants.  Blum finished the 2008-09 WHL regular season 3rd among all WHL defenceman in scoring with 66 points (16 goals, 50 assists) and has been selected as the Western Conference nominee for WHL Defenceman of the Year.
 
The WHL has also nominated Martin Jones of the Calgary Hitmen for the ADT CHL Goaltender of the Week Award.  Jones posted a 2-0-0-0 record this past week, allowing just two goals on 40 shots for a 1.000 goals-against average and .950 save percentage. 
 
Jones, an 18 year-old from North Vancouver, British Columbia, is in his third season with the Calgary Hitmen.  Jones was first among all WHL goaltenders at the conclusion of the regular season with 45 wins and third in the WHL with a 2.08 GAA.
