Hackett began his week in dramatic fashion stopping all 42 shots fired his way Friday night in a 2-0 win over one of the OHL’s top teams the Kitchener Rangers. The shutout was his first of the season and earned him first star of the game honours following a third period where he stopped 14 shots while facing four Rangers’ power play opportunities. On Saturday night he faced another 35 shots making 34 saves including 16 in the third period as second star of the 6-1 win over the Belleville Bulls.
Hackett, a 19-year-old from London, ON, is playing in his third full OHL season and second with the Whalers. In 12 games this season he has a 7-5-0-0 record with a 2.63 goals-against-average and .921 save percentage with one shutout. Selected by the Minnesota Wild in the third round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Hackett was the recipient of this award two times last season.
Also considered for the award this week was Jeff Bosch of the Moose Jaw Warriors. He allowed just one goal in two wins earning a shutout victory with 18 saves as third star of the game Saturday in a 1-0 win over the Kootenay Ice. Kevin Poulin of the Victoriaville Tigres was also strongly considered following his week that included two wins with a shutout victory while posting a goals-against-average of .500 and save percentage of .980.
