Scoring three goals inside of a minute is a rare accomplishment, while scoring those three goals in the first minute of play is even more rare. But three goals in 21 seconds within the first minute of play? Sounds like one team thought it was still the pre-game skate.
But that is exactly what happened on Wednesday night in an AHL contest involving the Lehigh Valley Phantoms and Binghamton Senators. Off the opening face-off, the Phantoms gained control of the puck, moving it into the Senators’ end where Petr Straka netted the first goal just 15 seconds into the game. Just 12 seconds later, Jason Akeson put the Phantoms up 2-0 on his team’s next rush into the Senators’ zone. Then, Andrew Gordon completed the opening salvo, scoring just nine seconds later on what was the weakest of the three goals to make the score 3-0 for the Phantoms.
Not surprisingly, Senators starting goaltender Andrew Hammond was pulled after surrendering the third goal.
