Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that forward Matt Puempel of the Peterborough Petes is the Boston Pizza OHL Player of the Week for the week ending March 14. Puempel becomes the first rookie to win the award this season, scoring four goals and four assists for eight points in two games with a plus-minus rating of plus-3.
Puempel became the youngest player in Petes’ history to score 33 goals in a season breaking the record of 30 goals set by Ryan Spooner last season. He set the mark as part of an incredible six-point game Saturday night in a 10-3 win over the Oshawa Generals. He scored his second hat-trick of the season and added three assists as first star of the game. Puempel also scored a goal and an assist in a 4-1 win over the Sudbury Wolves Thursday night. With the two wins, the Petes locked up the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference and will open the playoffs against the third place Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors.
Puempel, a 17-year-old from Essex, ON, was selected sixth overall by the Petes in the 2009 OHL Priority Selection. Named the OHL’s Rookie of the Month for January and February, Puempel led all OHL rookies in scoring this season with 64 points in 59 games scoring 33 goals and 31 assists.
