CALGARY, AB. – The WHL Player of the Week is forward Mitchell Callahan of the Kelowna Rockets.
Callahan picked up 12 points, scoring five goals and seven assists in four games over the past week, helping the Rockets to a 4-0-0-0 record.
On Tuesday, November 2nd, the Rockets hosted the Prince George Cougars. Callahan netted two goals, two assists and was named the games 1st Star as the Rockets tripled the Cougars 6-2. The next night the Rockets were in Kamloops to face the Blazers. Callahan scored the game winning goal and assisted on three markers to lead the Rockets to a 5-2 win over the Blazers. On Friday, November 5th, the Rockets were in Vancouver to face the Division leading Giants. Callahan picked up one goal as the Rockets edged the Giants 4-3. The Rockets were back in Kelowna on Saturday, November 6th, welcoming the Chilliwack Bruins to Prospera Place. Callahan scored his fifth goal in four games and added a pair of assists as the Rockets defeated the Bruins 9-3.
Callahan’s 12 points this past week has him ranked 21st among all WHL scorers with 22 points (10 goals, 12 assists) in 18 games played. The Kelowna Rockets have won four straight and are inching their way to the .500 mark with an 8-10-0-0 record for 16 points.
Callahan, a 19 year old from Whittier, California, is playing his third full season with the Kelowna Rockets. The 6th round selection by the Detroit Red Wings at the 2009 NHL Draft, he has appeared in 160 career WHL games collecting 96 points and 398 PIM.
The WHL has also nominated Calvin Pickard of the Seattle Thunderbirds for the CHL Goaltender of the Week Award. Pickard posted a 1-1-0-1 record this past week, stopping 126 of 131 shots faced for a 1.630 goals-against average and 0.962 save percentage. Pickard, a native of Winnipeg, MB, was selected by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2nd round – 49th overall in the 2010 NHL Draft.
