CALGARY, AB. – The WHL Player of the Week is forward Jonathan Parker of the Prince Albert Raiders.
Parker picked up nine points, scoring four goals and five assists to go with a +5 rating, in three games over the past week, helping the Raiders to a 2-1-0-0 record in that span.
In a rare WHL scheduling occurrence the Raiders faced off against East Division rivals the Regina Pats three straight times heading into the Holiday break starting on Tuesday, December 14th in Prince Albert. Parker scored twice, including the game winner, added an assist and was named the games 2nd Star as the Raiders doubled the Pats 6-3. The next meeting was Friday, December 17th in Regina where Parker picked up two goals, two assists and was named the games 2nd Star in a losing effort as the Pats bounced back to win 6-4. The rubber match was held back at the Art Hauser Centre on Saturday, December 18th in Prince Albert. Parker collected two assists as the Raiders went on to defeat the Pats 6-4.
Parker’s nine points in the past three games has him ranked 11th among all WHL scorers with 43 points (22 goals, 21 assists) in 37 games played. The Raiders head into the holiday break going 5-5 in their last 10 games and currently sit 4th in the WHL East Division with a 14-19-2-2 record for 32 points.
Parker, a 19 year old from Solana Beach, CA, is playing his third full season in the WHL being acquired by the Raiders mid-way through last season from the Seattle Thunderbirds. He has appeared in 171 career WHL games collecting 54 goals and 58 assists for 112 points thus far.
The WHL has also nominated Tyler Bunz of the Medicine Hat Tigers for the CHL Goaltender of the Week Award. Bunz posted a 2-0-0-0 record this past week with one shut-out, stopping 60 of 61 shots faced for a 0.500 goals-against average and a remarkable 0.984 save percentage. Bunz, a native of St. Albert, AB, led the Tigers to a 2-0 win over the Kelowna Rockets and a 2-1 road victory over rivals the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
