Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that forward Christian Thomas of the Oshawa Generals is the OHL Player of the Week for the second time this season. For the week ending March 13, Thomas led the league with nine points in three games scoring a league-high six goals which included his 50th of the season while adding three assists.
Thomas became the second player in the OHL to score 50 goals this season and established an OHL record in the process. He and his father Steve became the first Father and Son to record 50 goals in a season, with Steve setting the mark with the Toronto Marlboros in the 1983-84 season. Christian’s 50th goal came in dramatic fashion as part of a hat-trick performance with an assist as third star of a 6-5 win over the Kingston Frontenacs on Friday. Prior to that, Thomas was named first star of a 5-2 win over the Belleville Bulls on Wednesday scoring the game-winner plus two assists, and finished his week with two goals plus a shootout marker as second star to help the Generals edge the Peterborough Petes 4-3 in a shootout on Saturday.
Thomas, an 18-year-old from Toronto, ON, is playing in his third OHL season and second full season with the Generals. Selected in the second round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Rangers, Thomas sits fifth in league scoring with 94 points in 63 games but leads the OHL with 54 goals.
Also considered for the award this week was Justin Shugg of the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors, and Mark Scheifele of the Barrie Colts. Both recorded eight points in three games with Carolina Hurricanes prospect Shugg scoring five times with three assists, and 2011 NHL Entry Draft prospect Scheifele scoring three goals and five assists. In goal, Mark Visentin of the Niagara IceDogs went 3-0-0-0 with a goals-against-average of 2.50 and save percentage of .932.
