CHL Canada Russia Series: WHL coasts to 7-3 win over Russia in opener

The first game in what is now known as the CHL Canada Russia Series took place on Monday night, with Team WHL notching a decisive 7-3 win over Team Russia at Prospera Place in Kelowna, BC.

The WHL opened a 6-0 lead in the first two periods, adding one marker in the third period after Russia had scored three straight goals to make things semi-interesting.

Kamloops Blazers left wing Collin Shirley was the scoring star for Team WHL with a goal and three assists. The undrafted forward is off to a good start in the 2015-16 season, having posted 16 points in 16 games for the Blazers.

Shirley, the Star of the Game for the WHL, offered up his comments following the win.

Another offensive star for the WHL was Victoria Royals defenseman Joe Hicketts. The Detroit Red Wings prospect picked up two assists on the night and was a +3 for the night.

Hicketts talked about the win after the game.

Moose Jaw Warriors center Brayden Point, the WHL’s leading scorer,¬†also had a big night, scoring a goal and adding two assists for the three-point outing. In all, 12 players notched points for the WHL in the win. The WHL outshot Russia 29-18 on the night, with WHL starter Zach Sawchenko stopping all nine shots he faced, and Carter Hart stopping six of the nine Russian shots fired his way.
