Matt Finn is enjoying his experience at the Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Kelowna, perhaps due in part to the fact that he is among friends.
The 17-year-old defenseman traveled to Kelowna with Guelph Storm teammate Scott Kosmachuk. The pair have been close friends for many years, having grown up playing minor hockey together in Toronto. And upon their arrival, they were able to re-connect with Adam Pelech (Erie Otters) and Scott Laughton (Oshawa Generals), another of their minor hockey acquaintances from Toronto.
For his part, Finn is excited about playing in his draft year on a team in Guelph that graduated a number of veterans after last season. He talks about keeping things simple, but it is hard to ignore his 32 points in 41 games so far this season. The Storm selected Finn in the first round, 12th overall, in the 2010 OHL Priority Selection. Finn notes that Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty, a former member of the Storm, is his favourite NHL player.
Finn is on the Hockey Canada radar as well, having won a gold medal at the 2011 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament. He was also a member of Team Ontario, the gold medalists at the 2011 World U17 Challenge.
Ranked 15th among North American Skaters by Central Scouting, Finn is very poised and knows how to get the puck to the net.
