The Sens rookie camp wrapped up last night. For the second year in a row the Ottawa rookies won a mini tournament between the Lightning, Canadiens, and Panthers youngsters. Martin Havlat had a hat trick
including the game winner to down Tampa. Once again the tournament was a great success. The Panthers who host the tournament in Hull, Quebec hope to add more teams for next year’s tournament.
During the tournament Martin Havlat silenced his critics, including this one, concerning his physical play. While not carrying sharpened elbows Havlat didn’t totally shy away from the rough stuff. Frankly Havlat looked like a first line NHLer by the time the end of the camp rolled around. A late round pick from last year’s draft Alexandre Giroux, was very impressive potting numerous goals and controlling the flow of the game down low. Antoine Vermette, another Q league forward was brilliant showing plenty offensive improvisation.
Ottawa’s goaltending was very good during the tournament. Mathieu Chouinard looked confident and determined in between the pipes, in an allusion to his play of a few years back. While being solid, Lajeunesse the other goaltender was out played by the older of the two.
Another note is that Swiss defenseman Julien Vauclair, a beautiful skater, finally looks ready for North American hockey.
At least ten of the players from the rookie camp can expect to be invited to the main camp….. definites include
Forwards – Havlat, Chris Kelly, Giroux, Vermette,
Defensemen – Vauclair
Goaltenders – Chouinard, Lajeunesse
