A Look forward to the 2001 Draft: Ryan Hollweg

By Eric Taylor
Hockey’s Future staff caught up with Ryan Hollweg of the Medicine Hat Tigers, and was fortunate enough to ask him a few questions regarding the upcoming draft, his past playing experience and much more.

With the 2001 off-season now complete and the 2001 season right ahead of us, many of the young stars of tomorrow are just warming up. Ryan Hollweg is no exception, and this off-season has been a busy one to say the least. Ryan has been hitting the gym, working out, and getting stronger preparing himself for the upcoming season and the draft. This summer he has also been working on his scoring touch, and improving on his passing skills to help further enhance his complete game.

“Upon arriving in Medice Hat, my first impression was it was quite cold here, but a very great hockey town with great fans. The coaches and teammates were also great and welcomed me aboard the team.” stated Ryan, regarding his initial impression when arriving in Medicine Hat.

After a solid first year campaign with the Tigers, where he compiled 19 goals and 46 points in 54 games, Ryan and the Tigers are looking to come back even stronger and better. “We have many young players returning from last years team, each with a year of experience under their belt.” stated Ryan.

Ryan also just completed playing in the Canadian National Under 18 Camp a few weeks ago, and had another strong outing, where he contributed 6 points to help Canada win the Gold Medal. Ryan was one of 22 players at the camp , and some of the other teams competing that week (August 13th to August 20th) were Czech Republic, Slovakia and USA. On his performance, Ryan had to say “I think I had a great camp, and it was a great experience.” His teammate Chris St. Jacques also did very well. “Chris just had a great tournament and is looking great. He should have a great season this upcoming year.” said Ryan about Chris’s play in the most recent tournament.

Ryan brings the complete package to the table. He can put the puck in the net, is not afraid to mix it up in the corners, and can also make the unselfish pass. When asked about some of his goals for the team and himself, Ryan had this to say “As a team in general we would like to not only make the playoffs this year, but go deep in the playoffs. For myself, I would like to see me add 10 more points to my point total from last year, and improve as a more complete player”

Ryan is definitely looking forward to the upcoming season, and he has every right to be. Teamed up with Jay Bouwmeester and a host of other great young prospects they look to take Medicine Hat to the next level and beyond. When asked about some of the teams he was looking forward to playing he had this to say “I am really looking forward to playing Calgary this year, because they have been so dominant the past 3-4 years.”

Ryan Hollweg is definitely a name to remember come 2001 Draft Day, as he currently is being pegged as a first/second rounder by many sources. He has an all around game that will fit in nicely into the NHL a few years down the road.

A couple other interesting tidbits on Ryan:

He started playing hockey at the age of 4, and is originally from Los Angeles, California. He got into hockey when his Mom (who was from Vancouver), got him interested in the game as a youngster. His style of game, as mentioned above, is an all around game, and he compared it most to that of Brendan Shanahan (his favorite player). His favorite NHL team is the Colorado Avalanche, and he also enjoys Roller Hockey when he is not playing Ice Hockey.

Remember the name: RYAN HOLLWEG

Hockey’s Future would like to thank Ryan Hollweg for taking time out to do this interview and Dave Andjelic (Director of Marketing and Public Relations for the Medicine Hat Tigers) for setting it up. Everyone at Hockey’s Future would like to wish Ryan Hollweg the best of luck in the upcoming season and at the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.
