Sharks 1998 Training Camp

By pbadmin

Well, the San Jose Sharks have completed their 1998 training camp. As always, some guys were impressive, some not. The players who were sent down in the first set of cuts I did not get the chance to see… The others however, I have seen. Some of the guys sent down in the first set had write-ups in the paper about them, and I recorded those comments in the players review…

Sean Gauthier: G-Many have been impressed by him; unfortunately, I’m not one of them… He has given up tons of rebound opportunities… Bruce Racine should get the #3 job, only question is does Gauthier go to AHL or the ECHL?
Bill Houlder: D-Very typical Billy Houlder defensive hockey… Nothing flashy, but doing his job… Not allowing the forwards to get any great shots off…
Bob Rouse: D-He’s looking like a very good pickup… Largely overshadowed in Detroit…
Andrei Zyuzin: D-The fact that he has not shown much improvement since last year is a bit disheartening, but I wouldn’t get to worried quite yet… Darryl Sutter has voiced displeasure of his play, but also has implied that there has been progress as camp goes on…
Brad Stuart: D-You could tell he was a bit overwhelmed… He seemed surprised at times at the extra speed and intensity of the NHL players… Sent down to Regina at the last minute. (WHL)
Scott Hannan: D-Very accurate to his scouting report… Consistency has been his key the entire camp… Darryl Sutter has been quite impressed by him, not only making the Sharks, but playing quite a few minutes as well, including on the PP in the first two games.
Shawn Burr: LW-Showing more confidence in his knee than he did in limited duty last year after he suffered torn ligaments in his knee… Not afraid to get in there and muck it out for the puck now… And of course, his mouth is moving a mile a minute.
Jarred Skalde: C-Providing good depth, has yet to play in any of the two games, but there if they need him.
Bernie Nicholls: C-Incredible passes to Murphy… Incredible chemistry. Seems like he knows where he’s going to be well before he’s there… An old Blackhawk connection there…
Marcus Ragnarsson: D-Suffered a minor knee injury which slowed him down some, but has been solid defensively while playing…
Owen Nolan: RW-Out of camp with contract dispute, expected in soon though.
Ron Sutter: C-Another guy to provide good depth at Center… But what they need is a top line center, not another 4th line center…
 Jamie Baker: C-Back on a try-out basis…
Patrick Marleau: C-Has gotten about 15lbs bigger, and much faster… Some very impressive moves… Size has not effected stickhandling any…
Alex Korolyuk: RW-Not so much a comment about him, but involving him… It seemed like each time Korky was up to do something, Coach Sutter paid a little bit extra attention to him… He doesn’t seem to be getting pushed around as much as he did last year… Has an ongoing battle with Andy Sutton in camp, them dropping the gloves a couple times and exchanging slashes several times… Cut late in camp to Kentucky.
Alex Hicks: LW-Hasn’t done anything extraordinary, but is doing a capable job of maintaining his own… Made the team, but will probably be sent down with the return of Friesen and Nolan.
Joe Murphy: RW-Incredible chemistry with Nicholls… Almost has to be seen to believed… Looking like he was 25 again…
Mike Ricci: C-Arrived very late at camp, but has looked in good shape upon his return… Hair even longer than before… ;)
Marco Sturm: C-Seems to be maintaining the speed better… Has improved his footwork some… Always fast blueline to blueline, but struggled a little bit with the smaller American ice surface at times… Seems to have gotten over it…
Gary Suter: D-Out of camp with an elbow infection…
Tony Granato: RW-Typical Granny style of play… Really getting under the skin of the opponent… Seems more aggressive now that his jaw is fully healed from last year.
Ronnie Stern: RW-If the Sharks are looking for him to take the enforcer role, they’ll be a bit disappointed, but he is at least holding his own… Has looked sharp coming back from injuries. Definitely fresher than ever…
Shawn Heins: D-Has really turned some heads… I’m having trouble deciding whether he could use some more time in Kentucky or if SJ would be best for his development… I think Sutter is having the same trouble with him… They decided to bide some more time by sending him to the Canadian National Team…
David Shaw: D-Sent down in fourth set of cuts-to Kentucky, expected to retire (AHL)
Mike Craig: RW-Showing a lot of grit out there, doing a fine job of grinding it out and making his time worth while… Has taken advantage of the holdouts of Ricci, Friesen and Nolan…
Andy Sutton: D-Somewhat of a surprise… I don’t think the Sharks expected him to be much of a factor in the race for that final defenseman slot, but he’s right in the middle of it…
Brian Marchment: D-Typical Brian Marchment… I can’t say I’m a fan of his tactics, but he’s doing what he’s done for the last several years the way he’s always done it…
Jon Rohloff: D-The only way he’ll see the NHL is if there’s a whole lot of injuries to the team… With at least 8 guys ahead of him, that puts him well down the totem pole.
Mike Vernon: G-Not much mystery about what his spot will be, especially with the injury to Shields… It’s quite simply his job to lose, but don’t be shocked if that happens… If the Sharks start off like they did last year, you’ll see Steve Shields between the pipes, and if he plays well, Darryl Sutter will have no problem giving Shields the minutes…
Terry Friesen: G-Made many saves that he had no business stopping… Faster play still taking him by surprise a little though… Should be an interesting year for him as he was sent down to Kentucky relatively late in camp.
Steve Shields: G-Broke his pinkie finger of his glove hand midway through camp, so saw limited duty…
Murray Craven: LW-Looking very sharp… Scoring a few nifty goals, and very on top of play…
Brent Myers: RW-Has unfortunately suffered a relapse in his battle with drugs and alcohol… Has entered a rehab program in Los Angeles… Wish him the best…
Bruce Racine: G-He’ll be playing in the IHL this year, and quite frankly, I hope he plays the year in the IHL… He has not looked to impressive… He’s looked OK in practice, but when in a game situation, he looks a lot different…
John Nabokov: G-Sent down in only player of 6th set… To Kentucky. Like last year, he’s looked good at camp. Like last year, he has to prove he can do it in a game…
Stephen Guolla: LW-You can tell he’s making an effort to play better defense this year, but it still needs work… Did not make final week of cuts… Sent back to Kentucky of the AHL…
Adam Cologiacomo: RW-I was rather disappointed that he was sent down in the first set of cuts. I had hoped to get to see him in action, but to no avail. To Plymouth (OHL)
Stephane Matteau: LW-To be honest with you, I keep on missing Matteau… Haven’t really seen much of him one way or another…
Alex Boikov: D-Turned some heads with a few good hits, but he made his perennial trip to the minors fairly early in camp. (AHL)
Jeff Friesen: C-Yet to arrive in camp with contract holdout, expected soon though.
Mike Rathje: D-Late arrival in camp, but looked very good in the first two games… I’m interested to see how he’ll do once he’s more familiar with the team and whatnot…
Garrett Burnett: LW-Sent down in fourth set of cuts-to Kentucky (AHL)
Steve Lingren: D-Sent down in third set of cuts-to Kentucky (AHL)
Eric LaPlante: LW-Needs to bulk up some, but didn’t look bad at all… Some good defensive plays, and seemed to be playing Sutter style of hockey… If attitude problems are over, he could be a good pickup. Sent down in second set of cuts-to Halifax (QMJHL)
Matt Bradley: RW-His physical prowess is much better, but still needs work… Seemed to get knocked off the puck a bit to often. Will spend the year in Kentucky, possible earning a spot next year… (AHL)
Jonathan Cheechoo: RW-He MUST work on skating before making the jump… All other aspects of his game did look impressive though. Seemed to be teamed with Nicholls a lot… Sent down in second set of cuts-to Belleville (OHL)
Mark Smith: C-Excellent job of mucking it out behind the net, but must work on skating with the puck in traffic… Earned himself a spot in Kentucky with his hard work. (AHL)
Peter Allen: D-Sent down in third set of cuts-to Kentucky (AHL)
Jarrett Deuling: LW-Probably lasted longer than many thought he would, but eventual destination was Kentucky… Just couldn’t control the puck. (AHL)
Peter Roed: C-Sent down in first set of cuts-to Kentucky (AHL)
Christian Gosselin: D-Sent down in fourth set of cuts-to Kentucky. Didn’t really show much considering the length he was here for it seemed. (AHL)
Chris Libett: D-Sent down in first set of cuts-to Kentucky (AHL)
Jason Lawmaster: D-Sent down in first set of cuts-to Belleville (OHL)
Rob Davison: D-Sent down in first set of cuts- to North Bay (OHL)
Robert Mulick: D-Sent down in first set of cuts-to Sault St. Marrie (OHL)
Joe Blaznek: LW-Sent down in first set of cuts-to Kentucky (AHL)
Andy MacInyre: LW-Sent down in first set of cuts-to Kentucky (AHL)
Cam Severson: LW-Sent down in first set of cuts-to Prince Albert. Another guy who I had hoped to get a look at… (WHL)
Brandon Coalter: LW-Was very impressive during camp. Very impressive footwork avoiding hit when necessary, and taking it when necessary also… Even dished out a few decent hits on some pretty big guys. He lasted way longer than expected, but was sent down to Oshawa midway through camp. (OHL)
Valentin Passarelli: C-Sent down in first set of cuts-to Kentucky (AHL)
Robb Palahnuk: LW-Sent down in second set of cuts-to Sarnia (OHL)
Chris Lipsett: C-Sent down in first set of cuts-to Kentucky (AHL)
Ryan Kraft: C-He seemed a bit lost at times on the ice, but did well enough to earn a spot in Kentucky. Sent down in second set of cuts-to Kentucky, although since has been reassigned to Richmond of the ECHL I believe… (AHL/ECHL)
Teemu Riihijarvi: LW-Sutter was impressed at times, but conceded that he still has a ways to go. Sent down in first set of cuts-to Espoo (Finland)
Adam Nittel: RW-Darryl Sutter made no bones about the fact that he liked Nittel’s grittyness on the ice, but was sent down in first set of cuts to Missisauga (OHL)
Bret DeCecco: RW-Sent down in first set of cuts-to Seattle (WHL)
Kirby Law: C-Released in first set of cuts…
Alex Motley: RW-Released in first set of cuts…
