KIBIHT 2001: Top Teams Start To Emerge

By Glen Crichton

With two days completed (some scores were not in at time of
printing), the top teams are beginning to show
themselves at the Kamloops International Bantam Ice Hockey
Tournament. The Kelowna Jr. Rockets and Edmonton Lions lead the Red
Division after two wins and then playing to a draw when facing each
other. The Orange Division is led by the Airdrie Xtreme and Toronto
Young Nationals at 2-0, while the Green Divsion is led by the Wexford
Raiders at 2-0. The Detroit Honeybaked Hams lead the Blue Division at
3-0.

Kelowna and Edmonton both have smooth skating clubs that like to
run and gun. Kelowna isn’t quite as big as the Edmonton team, however
they are very gritty. After seeing the two teams play to a draw I
felt that Kelowna was fortunate to do so as their goaltender was
bailed out numerous times after the puck would get through him, then
have a teammate stop the puck from crossing the line or clearing it
out of danger. Kelowna was also outshot in the contest but found a
way to stay in it which says a lot about their gritty play. It
appears as though these two teams will fight it out for top spot in
the divsion.

In the Orange divison, Airdrie and Toronto both have 2-0
records, however both teams were meeting in an important match-up
tonight as this was going to print. I’ve only seen the Xtreme play
once and have yet to see Toronto play so I really can’t compare the
two teams. The game in which I saw Airdrie play, they played a run
and gun style game, leaving their goaltender to save the day on more
than one occaission.

The Wexford Raiders are the most impressive team that I’ve seen
play as of yet, with an explosive offensive game and some punishing
blueliners who throw huge open ice hits, but the key ingredient I
noticed in their game was discipline. In the two games I’ve witnessed
Wexford play, they were both aggressive and skilled, much the same as
Detroit Honeybaked. These guys will be a handful for any team, though
getting out of the division will be tough as they have yet to face
the tough Notre Dame Hounds or Detroit Compuware in their own
division yet. Notre Dame was leading the Compuware team when I was
watching 3-0 and looked like they play a similar style to the Raiders
so there is some good hockey to be played yet in the Orange Division.

The Blue Division is led by the defending tourney champs,
Detroit Honeybaked, who are back with a smaller, although just as
explosive offence team as last year. They seem home and cooled out in
their divison already as all other teams have a loss and Detroit sits
atop the division at 3-0. Very deep offensively, with first year
bantam Kevin Porter leading both the team and the tournament in
scoring, this team gets scoring from everybody except the goaltender,
mind you their goaltending appears as solid as ever. If one weakness
does appear this year on Honeybaked, it is a lack of quality depth on
the defence, an area where in years past this team was often
dominating. A key to their game is discipline however and they once
again appear to have it in spades. The Calgary Bruins played
Honeybaked very tough though and if an upset occurs, Calgary could
squeak in.

More team profiles will follow tomorrow and the player profiles
will follow tomorrow as well.
