Funny how age is such a factor with judging a players worth but in Ty Conklin’s case that seems to be true. At the age of 25 he is a little old to be considered a prospect but since he has yet to play a pro game he falls into that catigory. He started things a little later than most by playing a couple years with Green Bay of the USHL before enrolling at the University of New Hampshire. Unfortunately due to NCAA rules he had to sit out the 97-98 season but he made up for it in fine fashion by posting outstanding numbers the following three seasons. As a rookie at the age of 22 he spilt the year in net and managed to receive accolades for rookie goalie of the year. His following statistics are something to behold considering he had not been picked up by a NHL team.

Over the past three seasons Conklin has garnered much reconigtion from the University of New Hampshire and Hockey East. The last two years must have seemed like one big award banquet with having been a Hobey Baker finalist twice, named to the All-American second team in 1998-99 and first team in 1999-00 ahead of Rick DiPietro. Is the only goaltender in Hockey East history
to be the goalie of the month two months in a row on November/December. His life time winning percentage at the college level is 77% and has only allowed 1 goal 23 times, winning the tight games by posting 11 wins out of 13 games one season.

One of the more interesting aspects about Conklin is that he is the team captain which is unheard of in most hockey leagues. Perhaps is advanced age and maturity with his leadership will allow him the oppertunity to become next years back up to Tommy Salo. If history over the last year has told us anything about the changes in this organization and goaltenders they may have unearthed a diamond in the rough.
