Canadiens’ weekly prospects update

Ron Hainsey -D (Drafted-00(1/13))

Hainsey was shutout through 4 games this week. He’s still trying to regain his pre-injury form. He’s keeping the game simple, while playing solid defense. Overall, the 6’3″, 200-lbs defenseman has played 12 games. He has 6 points (3-3-6), and is +5 with 6 minutes in penalties. All 3 of his goals were scored on the powerplay.

Mathieu Garon -G (Drafted-96(2/44))

Garon was sent down to Québec on December 8th, 2001. The return of Jeff Hackett will give Garon the opportunity to get adequate playing time with Québec. Overall, the 6’2″, 192-lbs goalie has a 5-1-1 record with a 2.54 GAA, and an impressive .924 save percentage.

Eric Chouinard -F (Drafted-98(1/16))

Chouinard scored 2 goals through 4 games this week. He snapped out of a 9-game scoreless streak with Québec’s lone goal during a 5-1 loss to Bridgeport. Overall, the 6’3″, 207-lbs forward has played 25 games. He has 20 points (9-11-20), and is +1 with 6 minutes in penalties. He also has a team leading 71 shots on goal.

Francois Beauchemin -D (Drafted-98(3/75))

Beauchemin was shutout through 1 game this week. He was a healthy scratch during each of the last 3 games. Overall, the 6’0″, 201-lbs defenseman has played 11 games. He has 4 points (2-2-4), and is -3 with 10 minutes in penalties. Beauchemin has also played 7 ECHL games with Mississippi. He has 4 points (1-3-4), and is -1 with 2 minutes in penalties. He’s directed 13 shots on goal.

Marc-Andre Thinel -F (Drafted-99(5/145))

Thinel scored 1 goal through 4 games since our last update. The goal was his first since October 24th; a span of 18 games. Overall, the 5’10”, 178-lbs winger has played 26 games. He has 5 points (2-3-5), and is +2 with 2 minutes in penalties. He also has 16 shots on goal.

Mathieu Descoteaux -D (Drafted-96(1/19) Edmonton)

Descoteaux scored 1 goal through 4 games this week. Overall, the 6’4′, 208-lbs defenseman has played 25 games. He has 11 points (5-6-11), and is -8 with 18 minutes in penalties. All 5 of his goals were scored on the powerplay, and he has 58 shots on goal.

Vadim Tarasov -G (Drafted-99(7/196))

Tarasov continues to suffer from a groin injury. He remains in Montréal to undergo treatment for the injury. Overall, the 5’11”, 187-lbs goalie has played 3 AHL games. He is 2-0-1 with a 2.28 GAA, and a .926 save percentage.

Jason Ward -F (Drafted-97(1/11))

Ward managed 4 assists through 4 games since our last update. Overall, the 6’3″, 193-lbs winger has played 27 games. He has 17 points (4-13-17), and is -8 with 92 minutes in penalties. One of his goals was scored on the powerplay, and he’s directed 58 shots on goal.

Marcel Hossa -C/W (Drafted-00(1/16))

Hossa scored 2 goals through 4 games this week. Both goals came during a 5-4 loss to Manitoba. The young Slovak was also responsible for 5 of the team’s 17 shots on goal during that game. Overall, the 6’2″, 211-lbs winger has played 27 games. He has 13 points (5-7-13) with 10 minutes in penalties. His plus/minus is even, and he’s also directed 63 shots on goal. Two of his 5 goals were scored on the powerplay.

Martti Jarventie -D (Drafted-01(4/109))

Jarventie scored 1 goal through 4 games this week. Overall, the 5’11”, 185-lbs defenseman has played 21 games. He has 6 points (2-4-6), and is -6 with 2 minutes in penalties. He’s also registered 42 shots on goal.

Timo Vertala -W (Drafted-96(5/181))

Vertala was shutout through 4 games this week. Overall, the 6’1″, 180-lbs. winger has played 22 games. He has 5 point (4-1-5), and is -5 with 12 minutes in penalties. He’s managed 29 shots on goal. One of his goals was scored on the powerplay, while 2 others were scored shorthanded.

Michael Ryder -W (Drafted-98(8/216))

Ryder managed 2 goals and 2 assists through 3 games since our last update. He was named Mississippi’s top player during the week, and is averaging nearly 6 shots on goal per game. Through 6 games with Mississippi the Newfoundlander has 8 points (4-4-8), and is -3 with one powerplay goal. Overall, the 6’1″, 195-lbs winger has played 13 AHL games. He has 4 points (2-2-4), and is +2 with 2 minutes in penalties. He’s also managed 13 shots on goal.

Jerome Marois -LW (Drafted-99(9/253))

Mississippi’s Jerome Marois’ was shutout through 3 games since our last update. Overall, the 6’0″, 192-lbs winger has played 12 ECHL games. He has 6 points (4-2-6), and is minus-8 with 24 shots on goal.

Olivier Michaud -G (Free Agent-2001(3-y contract))

Michaud was invited to attend Canada’s 2002 World Junior Championship selection camp roster. The 18-year-old goaltender has come along way since last year’s NHL Entry Draft, when NHL scouts didn’t think enough of his game to draft the Shawinigan goaltender. The Beloil native finished the week with a 1-0-1 record. Overall the 5’11, 163-lbs goalie is 19-3-2 with a QMJHL leading 2.17 GAA, and an .897 save percentage. He has the second-most wins in the league, while his save percentage is good enough for 6th place.

Christian Larrivée -C (Drafted-00(4/114))

Chicoutimi’s Christian Larrivée picked up 6 points through 3 games this week. His best offensive game came against Rouyn-Noranda, as he scored 2 goals and added 1 assist during a 7-2 win. He’s second on his team in goals scored, and is currently on a 9-game point scoring streak. Overall, the 6’3″, 195-lbs Larrivée has played 32 games. He has 42 points (21-21-42), and is +4 with 27 minutes in penalties. Eight of his goals were scored on the powerplay, while another was scored shorthanded.

Duncan Milroy -RW (Drafted-01(2/37))

Duncan Milroy was traded to Kootenay on December 4th. Prior to the trade Milroy had gone 3 straight games without a point. He found his offensive touch following the deal, as he registered 4 points through the first 3 games with his new team. Overall, the 6’0″, 185-lbs winger has played 29 games. He has 35 points (21-14-35), and is -5 with 24 minutes in penalties. Seven of his goals were scored on the powerplay, while 2 others were scored shorthanded.

Josef Balej -RW (Drafted-00(3/78))

Portland’s Josef Balej managed 5 points through 4 games since our last update. Overall, the 5’11”, 175-lbs winger has played 28 games. He has 36 points (18-18-36), and is +11 with 20 minutes in penalties. Two of his goals were scored short-handed, while 6 others were scored on the powerplay.

Andrew Archer -D (Drafted-01(7/203))

Guelph’s Andrew Archer scored the first goal of his OHL career during Sunday’s game against Ottawa. It took the young defenseman 84 games to pot his first Major-Junior marker. Overall, the 6’4″, 195-lbs stay at home defenseman has played 32 games. The Guelph assistant captain has 10 points (1-9-10), and is +1 with 42 minutes in penalties.

Eric Himelfarb -C (Drafted-01(6/171))

Sarnia’s Eric Himelfarb managed 5 points through 3 games this week. Overall, the 5’9″, 161-lbs center has played 34 games. He has 42 points (19-23-42), and is -6 with 37 minutes in penalties. Five of his goals were scored on the powerplay, while 2 others were scored shorthanded.

Mike Komisarek -D (Drafted-01(1/7))

Komisarek was shutout through 2 games this week. Komisarek will play one more game before joining the US World Junior team for it’s training camp beginning on December 16th. Overall, the 6’4″, 228-lbs defenseman has played 17 games. He has 14 points (6-8-14), and is a team leading +8 with 40 minutes in penalties. One of his goals was scored shorthanded, and he’s managed 42 shots on goal.

Chris Dyment -D (Drafted-99(4/97))

Boston University’s Chris Dyment managed 3 points through 2 games since our last update. His performance during this span was good enough to allow him to be named the Hockey East defensive player of the week. Overall, the 6’3″, 202-lbs. defenseman has played 14 games. He has 10 points (5-5-10), and is a team-best +12 with 12 minutes in penalties. Four of his goals were scored on the powerplay while another was scored shorthanded.

Matt Shasby -D (Drafted-99(5/150))

Alaska-Anchorage University’s Matt Shasby registered 2 points through 2 games this week. Both his points came during a 5-3 loss to MSU. Overall, the 6’3″, 200-lbs. defenseman has played 15 games. The only player on the current UAA roster who’s been drafted by an NHL team has 8 points (3-5-8) with 43 minutes in penalties. All 3 of his goals have been scored on the powerplay.

Scott Selig -C/RW (Drafted-00(6/172))

Northeastern University’s Scott Selig did not play in any games this week. Overall, the 6’3″, 180-lbs. forward has played 12 games. He has 1 goal, and is a disappointing -8 with 16 minutes in penalties. His lone goal was scored on the powerplay, and he’s directed 22 shots on goal.

Ryan Glenn -D (Drafted-00(5/145))

St. Lawrence University’s Ryan Glenn was shutout through 2 games this week. Overall, the 6’2″, 210-lbs. defenseman has played 13 games. He has 1 assist, and is -4 with 20 minutes in penalties.

Alexander Buturlin -RW (Drafted-99(2/39))

The 6’0″, 187 lbs. Buturlin has played 22 games in the RHL. He has 5 points (2-3-5) to go along with 10 minutes in penalties.

Alexander Perezhogin -C (Drafted-01(1/25))

Perezhogin is playing with Mostovik Kurgan of the Russian High League. Official stats show that the 5’11”, 175-lbs center has played 19 games. He has 24 points (14-10-24) to go along with 10 minutes in penalties. He’s also played 3 games this season with Omsk of the Russian Super League, where he’s scored 1 goal to go along with 4 minutes in penalties.

Joni Puurula -G (Drafted-00(8/243))

HPK’s Joni Puurula has begun to dress for games for the first time since the preseason, but has yet to see any in-game action.

Johan Eneqvist -F (Drafted-00(4/109))

Leksands IF’s Johan Eneqvist was shutout through 1 game since our last update. Overall, the 6’0″, 190-lbs forward has played 23 games. He has 4 points (1-3-4), and is -1 with 14 minutes in penalties

Tomas Plekanec -LW (Drafted-01(3/71))

Kladno’s Tomas Plekanec was shutout through 2 games since our last update. Overall, the 5’10”, 196-lbs winger has played 31 games. He has 11 points (4-7-11), and is -8 with 26 minutes in penalties.

Victor Ujcik -F (Drafted-01(9/266))

Slavia Praha’s Viktor Ujcik scored 1 goal through 3 games this week. Overall, the 5’10”, 194-lbs winger has played 31 games. He has 23 points (12-11-33), and is -10 with 16 minutes in penalties.

Hab you Heard?

Kim Staal, the Habs’ 4th round pick in ’96 has 21 points (9-12-21) through 30 games with Modo of the Swedish Elite League. He’s +4, with 10 minutes in penalties. One of his goals was scored on the powerplay.

-Ilkka Mikkola, the Habs’ 3rd round pick in ’97 has 1 goal through 29 games with Jokerit of the Finnish Elite League. He is +4 with 10 minutes in penalties.

-Evan Lindsay has a 6-6 record though 12 games with Mississippi of the ECHL. He has a 3.55 GAA, and an .887 save percentage.
