Canadiens’ weekly prospects update

By Chris Boucher

Ron Hainsey -D (Drafted-00(1/13))

Hainsey registered 5 assists through 7 games since our last update. He was shutout during a January 2nd game against St. John, thereby ending a season-high 5-game point-scoring streak. He’s played strong defensively since his return, raising his plus/minus from +1 to +5 after missing 14 games with a wrist injury. Overall, the 6’3″, 200-lbs defenseman has played 23 games. He has 13 points (5-8-13), and is +5 with 10 minutes in penalties. The 20-year old rookie was also named to the PlanetUSA AHL all-star team.

Mathieu Garon -G (Drafted-96(2/44))

Garon has rebounded from a poor stretch of play he experienced immediately following his return to Québec. He’s undefeated in his last 6 games. Through that same stretch he’s lowered his GAA by close to half a goal per game, and raised his save percentage 20 points. Overall, the 6’2″, 192-lbs goalie has a 9-3-5 record with 2.70 GAA, and a .918 save percentage.

Eric Chouinard -F (Drafted-98(1/16))

Chouinard registered 1 assist in 2 games following our last update. He injured his shoulder during a December 27th game against Portland, and is tentatively scheduled to return within the week. Overall, the 6’3″, 207-lbs left winger has played 30 games. He has 26 points (11-15-26), with 8 minutes in penalties. Surprisingly, only 1 of his 11 goals has been scored on the powerplay; which speaks volumes for Chouinard’s 5-on-5 play this season. His plus/minus is even, and he also has 94 shots on goal.

Francois Beauchemin -D (Drafted-98(3/75))

Beauchemin scored 1 goal through 7 games since our last update. Overall, the 6’0″, 201-lbs defenseman has played 19 games. He has 5 points (3-2-5), and is -5 with 18 minutes in penalties. Beauchemin has also played 7 ECHL games with Mississippi. He has 4 points (1-3-4), and is -1 with 2 minutes in penalties. He’s directed 13 shots on goal.

Marc-Andre Thinel -F (Drafted-99(5/145))

Thinel was shutout through 7 games since our last update. He has only 1 point in his last 29 games. Thinel has played well defensively, but could benefit from the increased ice time he would see playing in ECHL with Mississippi; a temporary demotion could be in the cards for the 20-year-old. That said, the Citadelles’ current lack of forwards might make any demotion logistically impossible. Overall, the 5’10”, 178-lbs winger has played 37 games. He has 5 points (2-3-5), and is +2 with 2 minutes in penalties. He also has 18 shots on goal.

Mathieu Descoteaux -D (Drafted-96(1/19) Edmonton)

Descoteaux managed 1 assist through 7 games since our last update. Overall, the 6’4′, 208-lbs defenseman has played 36 games. He has 14 points (5-9-14), and is -9 with 22 minutes in penalties. All 5 of his goals were scored on the powerplay, and he has 75 shots on goal.

Vadim Tarasov -G (Drafted-99(7/196))

Tarasov continues to suffer from a groin injury. He was supposed to be reevaluated in early January, but there’s still no word on a possible return date. He remains in Montréal, where he’s undergoing treatment for the injury. Overall, the 5’11”, 187-lbs goalie has played 3 AHL games. He is 2-0-1 with a 2.28 GAA, and a .926 save percentage.

Jason Ward -F (Drafted-97(1/11))

Ward managed 10 points through 7 games since our last update. He’s playing on a line with Craig Darby and Marcel Hossa. The line has easily been the Citadelles’ best line in recent games, due predominantly to Darby’s dominance over AHL talent. Overall, the 6’3″, 193-lbs winger has played 38 games. He has 30 points (11-19-30), and is -3 with 104 minutes in penalties. Four of his goals were scored on the powerplay, and he’s directed a team-high 103 shots on goal.

Marcel Hossa -C/W (Drafted-00(1/16))

Hossa scored 5 goals and added 4 assists through 7 games since our last update. Like Ward, Hossa is playing on a line with Craig Darby. He’s using his puck-protection skills to win battles in the corners, and is 3rd in team scoring. The 20-year-old is also 6th in scoring among AHL rookies, while his statistics compare favourably to the numbers put up by both Mike Ribeiro and Eric Chouinard during their rookie seasons. Overall, the 6’2″, 211-lbs winger has played 38 games. He has 26 points (12-14-26), and is +1 with 18 minutes in penalties. He’s also directed 95 shots on goal, while 4 of his 12 goals were scored on the powerplay.

Martti Jarventie -D (Drafted-01(4/109))

Jarventie scored 2 goals and added 2 assists through 7 games since our last update. The Finnish defenseman is tied for second in scoring among Québec defenseman, but has sometimes struggled defensively. His -12 rating is the team’s worst. The number looks even worse when we compare it to the +17 Craig Darby has put up with the same team. Overall, the 5’11”, 185-lbs defenseman has played 32 games. He has 14 points (5-9-14), and is an already mentioned -12 with 6 minutes in penalties. He’s also directed 64 shots on goal.

Timo Vertala -W (Drafted-96(5/181))

Vertala is currently unable to play because of an ankle sprain. Overall, the 6’1″, 180-lbs. winger has played 24 games. He has 5 points (4-1-5), and is -5 with 12 minutes in penalties. He’s managed 30 shots on goal. One of his goals was scored on the powerplay, while 2 others were scored shorthanded.

Michael Ryder -W (Drafted-98(8/216))

Ryder has registered 6 points through 5 games since our last update. He was named Mississippi’s top player for the month of December, and is averaging over 5 shots on goal per game. Through 19 games with Mississippi the Newfoundlander has 25 points (13-12-25), and is -1 with 2 minutes in penalties. Two of his goals were scored on the powerplay, while 2 others were scored shorthanded. Overall, the 6’1″, 195-lbs winger has played 13 AHL games. He has 4 points (2-2-4), and is +2 with 2 minutes in penalties. He’s also managed 13 shots on goal.

Jerome Marois -LW (Drafted-99(9/253))

Jerome Marois was called up to Québec from Mississippi on December 26th. The Citadelles have been experiencing a shortage of forwards, which precipitated Marois’ recall. It is not known why Marois was chosen over Ryder, considering both players are wingers, and Ryder has been Mississippi’s best player since arriving there on November 27th. The 21-year old Marois has played 3 AHL games. He has no points, and his plus/minus remains even. Overall, the 6’0″, 192-lbs winger has also played 19 ECHL games. He has 9 points (6-3-9), and is minus-12 with 33 shots on goal.

Olivier Michaud -G (Free Agent-2001(3-y contract))

Michaud participated in the World Junior Championship with team Canada over the holidays. The Beloil native played in 2 tournament games; winning 1 while losing the other. He stopped 23 shots during a 6-1 win over Switzerland, and stopped 39 of 43 shots during a 4-1 loss to Finland. Michaud left the Czech Republic with an already mentioned 1-1 record to go along with a 2.50 GAA, and a solid .924 save percentage. Overall the 5’11, 163-lbs goalie is 19-3-2 with a QMJHL leading 2.17 GAA, and an .897 save percentage.

Christian Larrivée -F (Drafted-00(4/114))

Chicoutimi’s Christian Larrivée picked up 14 points through 9 games since our last update. He’s currently on a 19-game point-scoring streak, which is the 4th best streak in the QMJHL this season. For comparison sake, Marc-André Thinel had a 21-game point-scoring streak with Victoriaville last season. Overall, the 6’3″, 195-lbs Larrivée has played 43 games. He has 60 points (30-30-60), and is +2 with 38 minutes in penalties. Ten of his goals were scored on the powerplay, while another was scored shorthanded. The 19-year old is also 19th in QMJHL scoring.

Duncan Milroy -RW (Drafted-01(2/37))

Duncan Milroy registered 9 points through 8 games since our last update. After a slow start with Kootenay that included a 4-game scoreless streak, Milroy is currently on a 5-game point-scoring streak. He’s also 4th in the WHL in goals scored. Overall, the 6’0″, 185-lbs winger has played 37 games. He has 44 points (27-17-44), and is -3 with 30 minutes in penalties. Ten of his goals were scored on the powerplay, while 2 others were scored shorthanded.

Josef Balej -RW (Drafted-00(3/78))

Portland’s Josef Balej managed 8 points through 5 games since our last update. Balej is currently 5th in league scoring, and is tied for the league-lead in goals with 32. He was named the WHL’s top player for the week ending December 25th, and was also named the league’s top player for the entire month of December. Overall, the 5’11”, 175-lbs winger has played 38 games. He has 56 points (32-24-56), and is +16 with 28 minutes in penalties. Three of his goals were scored short-handed, while 15 others were scored on the powerplay.

Eric Himelfarb -C (Drafted-01(6/171))

Sarnia’s Eric Himelfarb managed 10 points through 5 games since our last update. The 18-year old is currently on a 5-game point-scoring streak, and has points in 21 of Sarnia’s last 23 games. His recent success has also allowed him to climb to 6th spot in OHL scoring. Overall, the 5’9″, 161-lbs center has played 426 games. He has 56 points (25-31-56), with 37 minutes in penalties. His plus/minus has improved from -9 to even through the last 10 games. Six of his goals were scored on the powerplay, while 2 others were scored shorthanded.

Mike Komisarek -D (Drafted-01(1/7))

Komisarek participated in the World Junior Championship with team USA over the holidays. The US finished 5th in the tournament with a 4-1-2 record. The 19-year old played in all 6 games, and registered 2 assists. He left the Czech Republic with a -1 rating to go along with 14 minutes in penalties, and 5 shots on goal. He was benched during the 3rd period of one game, and reportedly had some difficulty on the larger ice surface. He plays an aggressive physical game, which likely contributed to him being caught out of position while trying to make big hits. Overall, the 6’4″, 228-lbs defenseman has played 18 games. He has 14 points (6-8-14), and is +8 with 40 minutes in penalties. One of his goals was scored shorthanded, and he’s managed 45 shots on goal.

Chris Dyment -D (Drafted-99(4/97))

The injury is serious enough that Habs’ management did not want Perezhogin to play. Reports also indicate that the young Russian may come to Montréal in order to receive treatment.
