The Ontario Hockey League Western Conference All-Stars scored a big 7-2 win over the Western Hockey League Eastern Conference All-Stars last night in Red Deer, Alberta, giving the OHL a chance to claim the 2002 Hershey Cup.
The win leaves the OHL with a 1-1 record in the series, which features two all-star teams from each of the three CHL leagues. The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League is 1-0 after its Lebel Conference All-Stars beat the OHL Eastern Conference team 4-2 in Ottawa last Wednesday, while the WHL is 0-1.
There is one game left in the Hershey Cup CHL All-Star Series – Wednesday, Feb. 6 in Rimouski, Quebec, when the QMJHL Dilio Conference All-Stars host the WHL Western Conference All-Stars. If Quebec wins that game, the QMJHL wins its second consecutive Hershey Cup. If the WHL wins, all three leagues will have 1-1 record and the Cup winner will be decided on goals for/goals against.
On Wednesday night in Red Deer, the game was tied 1-1 halfway through the second period but the OHL West Stars exploded for three goals in six minutes in the second period to lead 4-1. They then followed with another three-goal binge in the third period to complete the rout.
Second period goals by Rick Nash of the London Knights, Steve Ott of the Windsor Spitfires and Kris Newbury of the Sarnia Sting in the second period put the OHL West ahead for good. Below is the complete game summary from last night’s game.
