Canadiens’ weekly prospects update

Ron Hainsey -D (Drafted-00(1/13))

Hainsey managed 1 goal through 3 games since our last update. Despite Québec losing 2 of 3 games this week, Hainsey still managed to raise his plus/minus from +6 to +8. Overall, the 6’3″, 200-lbs defenseman has played 33 games. He has 19 points (7-12-19), and is +8 with 12 minutes in penalties. Four of his goals were scored on the powerplay, and he’s directed 71 shots on goal. The 20-year old rookie will play for Team PlanetUSA during the upcoming AHL all-star game.

Mathieu Garon -G (Drafted-96(2/44))

Garon recorded a 1-2 record through 3 games since our last update. Saturday’s game against Providence was the 24-year-old’s 21st straight start. Overall, the 6’2″, 192-lbs goalie has played 28 AHL games. He has a 13-7-7 record with 2.71 GAA, and a .916 save percentage.

Eric Chouinard -F (Drafted-98(1/16))

Chouinard picked up 4 points through 3 games since our last update. He averaged 3 shots per game over the recently mentioned 3-game span. Overall, the 6’3″, 207-lbs left winger has played 36 games. He has 31 points (13-18-31), and is +2 with 12 minutes in penalties. Surprisingly, he has only one powerplay goal; which actually speaks volumes for Chouinard’s 5-on-5 play this season. He’s also directed 107 shots on goal.

Francois Beauchemin -D (Drafted-98(3/75))

Beauchemin was shutout through 2 games since our last update. He suffered a concussion during a game against Manchester, and is out indefinitely. Overall, the 6’0″, 201-lbs defenseman has played 28 games. He has 7 points (4-3-7), and is -8 with 32 minutes in penalties. Beauchemin has also played 7 ECHL games with Mississippi. He has 4 points (1-3-4), and is -1 with 2 minutes in penalties. He’s directed 13 shots on goal.

Marc-Andre Thinel -F (Drafted-99(5/145))

Thinel was shutout through 3 games since our last update. He has only 1 point in his last 39 games, and would likely benefit from the increased playing-time he would receive with Mississippi of the ECHL. Overall, the 5’10”, 178-lbs winger has played 47 games. He has 5 points (2-3-5), and is +1 with 6 minutes in penalties. He also has 26 shots on goal.

Mathieu Descoteaux -D (Drafted-96(1/19) Edmonton)

Descoteaux was shutout through 3 games since our last update. Overall, the 6’4′, 208-lbs defenseman has played 46 games. He has 15 points (6-9-15), and is -8 with 30 minutes in penalties. All 6 of his goals were scored on the powerplay, and he has 97 shots on goal.

Vadim Tarasov -G (Drafted-99(7/196))

Tarasov has returned to Québec following a groin injury that kept him out of action for 3 months. The 25-year-old should get some playing time during the Citadelles’ next stretch of games. His arrival will take some of the pressure off of a somewhat tired Mathieu Garon. Overall, the 5’11”, 187-lbs goalie has played 3 AHL games. He is 2-0-1 with a 2.28 GAA, and a .926 save percentage.

Jason Ward -F (Drafted-97(1/11))

Ward managed 2 points through 3 games since our last update. He’s among the team leaders in penalty minutes, and continues to play a strong physical game while maintaining a consistent offensive contribution. Overall, the 6’3″, 193-lbs winger has played 48 games. He has 36 points (12-24-36), and is -3 with 120 minutes in penalties. Four of his goals were scored on the powerplay, while another was scored shorthanded. He’s directed a team-high 127 shots on goal.

Martti Jarventie -D (Drafted-01(4/109))

Jarventie scored 1 goal and added 1 assist through 1 game since our last update. Prior to Saturday’s game against Providence, the 25-year-old rookie had missed 2 games with a rib injury. Overall, the 5’11”, 185-lbs defenseman has played 38 games. He has 17 points (6-11-17), and is -10 with 14 minutes in penalties. He’s also directed 71 shots on goal.

Timo Vertala -W (Drafted-96(5/181))

Vertala is still unable to play because of an ankle sprain. Overall, the 6’1″, 180-lbs. winger has played 24 games. He has 5 points (4-1-5), and is -5 with 12 minutes in penalties. He’s managed 30 shots on goal. One of his goals was scored on the powerplay, while 2 others were scored shorthanded.

Michael Ryder -W (Drafted-98(8/216))

Ryder picked up an assist through 3 games since our last update. Overall, the 6’1″, 195-lbs winger has played 22 AHL games. He has 8 points (3-5-8), and is +1 with 2 minutes in penalties. He’s also directed 29 shots on goal.

Through 19 games with Mississippi the Newfoundlander has 25 points (13-12-25), and is -1 with 2 minutes in penalties. Two of his goals were scored on the powerplay, while 2 others were scored shorthanded.

Jerome Marois -LW (Drafted-99(9/253))

Jerome Marois was shutout through 2 AHL games since our last update, and was returned to Mississippi of the ECHL on January 26th. The 21-year-old Marois has played 10 AHL games. He has no points, to go along with 2 minutes in penalties.

The 6’0″, 192-lbs winger has also played 19 ECHL games. He has 9 points (6-3-9), and is minus-12 with 33 shots on goal.

Olivier Michaud -G (Free Agent-2001(3-y contract))

Michaud recorded a 1-1-1 record through 3 games since our last update. He has the fourth-most wins in the QMJHL despite playing 15 fewer games than many of his competitors. His GAA is tops in the league, while his save percentage is good enough for 5th place. Overall the 5’11, 163-lbs goalie has played 31 games. He has a 22-5-3 record with a 2.13 GAA, and a .900 save percentage.

Michaud also participated in the World Junior Championship with team Canada over the holidays. The Beloil native played in 2 tournament games; winning 1 while losing the other. He stopped 23 shots during a 6-1 win over Switzerland, and stopped 39 of 43 shots during a 4-1 loss to Finland. Michaud left the Czech Republic with an already mentioned 1-1 record to go along with a 2.50 GAA, and a solid .924 save percentage.

Christian Larrivée -F (Drafted-00(4/114))

Chicoutimi’s Christian Larrivée was shutout through 3 games since our last update. He’s currently on a season-high 3-game scoreless streak, but still has points in 25 of his team’s last 29 games. Overall, the 6’3″, 195-lbs Larrivée has played 52 games. He has 69 points (33-36-69), and is +2 with 44 minutes in penalties. Eleven of his goals were scored on the powerplay, while another was scored shorthanded.

Duncan Milroy -RW (Drafted-01(2/37))

Duncan Milroy managed 3 points through 1 game since our last update. His play has been inconsistent this season, although he still has the WHL’s eighth-best goal total. Overall, the 6’0″, 185-lbs winger has played 43 games. He has 52 points (29-23-52), and is +1 with 30 minutes in penalties. Ten of his goals were scored on the powerplay, while 2 others were scored shorthanded.

Josef Balej -RW (Drafted-00(3/78))

Portland’s Josef Balej managed 4 points through 2 games since our last update. All 4 of his points came during an 8-1 win over Vancouver. Balej is currently 4th in league scoring, and is 2nd in goals with 38. He also has the second best PPG average among the WHL’s top point-scorers. Overall, the 5’11”, 175-lbs winger has played 46 games. He has 70 points (38-32-70), and is +18 with 32 minutes in penalties. Four of his goals were scored short-handed, while his 17 powerplay-markers lead the league.

Andrew Archer -D (Drafted-01(7/203))

Andrew Archer is unable to play due to a shoulder injury he suffered during a January 11th game against Sarnia. Overall, the 6’4″, 195-lbs stay at home defenseman has played 39 games. He has 11 points (1-10-11), and is -5 with 50 minutes in penalties.

Eric Himelfarb -C (Drafted-01(6/171))

Sarnia’s Eric Himelfarb managed 1 point through 3 games since our last update. He was shutout during a January 24th game against Brampton, thereby ending an 11-game point-scoring streak. Despite his offensive drought last week, Himelfarb remains the top point-producer among Hab prospects. His recent success has also allowed him to climb to 5th spot in OHL scoring. Overall, the 5’9″, 161-lbs center has played 51 games. He has 71 points (32-39-71), with 63 minutes in penalties. His plus/minus has improved from a season-low minus-9 to even. Nine of his goals were scored on the powerplay, while 2 others were scored shorthanded.

Mike Komisarek -D (Drafted-01(1/7))

Komisarek scored 2 goals and added 1 assist through 2 games since our last update. His entire offensive output came during a 3-2 win over Bowling Green. Overall, the 6’4″, 228-lbs defenseman has played 23 games. He has 18 points (8-10-18), and is +8 with 50 minutes in penalties. One of his goals was scored shorthanded, and he’s managed 60 shots on goal.

Komisarek also participated in the World Junior Championship with team USA over the holidays. The US finished 5th in the tournament with a 4-1-2 record. The 19-year old played in all 6 games, and registered 2 assists. He left the Czech Republic with a -1 rating to go along with 14 minutes in penalties, and 5 shots on goal.

Chris Dyment -D (Drafted-99(4/97))

Boston University’s Chris Dyment was shutout through 2 games since our last update, and is currently on a 4-game scoreless streak. Overall, the 6’3″, 202-lbs. defenseman has played 23 games. He has 13 points (5-8-13), and is a team-best +18 with 18 minutes in penalties. Four of his goals were scored on the powerplay while another was scored shorthanded. He also has 31 shots on goal.

Matt Shasby -D (Drafted-99(5/150))

Alaska-Anchorage University’s Matt Shasby managed 2 assists through 2 games since our last update. Both his assists came during a 3-2 loss to Minnesota-Duluth on January 26th. He was shutout during the January 25th game against MDU, thereby ending a 7-game point-scoring streak. He has points in 8 of UAA’s last 9 games, and has recently become the Habs’ top scoring defensive prospect (points per game). The 21-year old also has the sixth-best offensive numbers among WCHA defensemen. Overall, the 6’3″, 200-lbs. defenseman has played 23 games. He has 19 points (4-15-19) with 51 minutes in penalties, and 3 of his goals were scored on the powerplay.

Scott Selig -C/RW (Drafted-00(6/172))

Northeastern University’s Scott Selig scored 1 goal through 2 games since our last update. Overall, the 6’3″, 180-lbs. forward has played 22 games. He has 4 points (3-1-4), and is a disappointing -10 with 24 minutes in penalties. Two of his goals were scored on the powerplay, and he’s directed 41 shots on goal.

Ryan Glenn -D (Drafted-00(5/145))

St. Lawrence University’s Ryan Glenn was shutout through 2 games since our last update. Overall, the 6’2″, 210-lbs. defenseman has played 21 games. He has 5 assists, and is -5 with 17 minutes in penalties. Although he’s yet to score a goal this season, his 37 shots are good enough for 6th place on SLU’s roster.

Alexander Buturlin -RW (Drafted-99(2/39))

The 6’0″, 187 lbs. Buturlin has played 25 games in the RHL. He has 5 points (2-3-5) to go along with 12 minutes in penalties.

Alexander Perezhogin -F (Drafted-01(1/25))

Perezhogin recently traveled to Montréal in order to receive treatment for his knee injury. It was established that he will not need surgery. Two weeks rest, combined with medication should be enough to heal the injury. Perezhogin has played most of this season with Mostovik Kurgan of the Russian High League. Official stats show that the 5’11”, 175-lbs center has played 19 games. He has 24 points (14-10-24) to go along with 10 minutes in penalties. He’s also played 3 games this season with Omsk of the Russian Super League, where he’s scored 1 goal to go along with 4 minutes in penalties.

Perezhogin played for Russia during the recent World Junior tournament. He suffered from a knee injury throughout the tournament, and left the Czech Republic without registering a point through 5 games. His plus/minus was even, and he managed 8 shots on goal to go along with 4 minutes in penalties.

Joni Puurula -G (Drafted-00(8/243))

HPK’s Joni Puurula posted a 2-0 record through 2 games since our last update. He stopped 24 of 26 shots, and was named the game’s second star during a 2-2 tie with Karpat. He followed that up with a 21 save performance during a 5-2 win over JYP. Recently recovered from a season-shortening viral infection, the 19-year-old has play 3 games this season. He has a 2-0-1 record to go along with a 1.95 GAA, and a .929 save percentage.

Johan Eneqvist -F (Drafted-00(4/109))

Leksands IF’s Johan Eneqvist recorded 1 assist through 3 game since our last update. Overall, the 6’0″, 190-lbs forward has played 34 games. He has 7 points (3-4-7), and is -4 with 20 minutes in penalties.

Tomas Plekanec -F (Drafted-01(3/71))

Plekanec scored 1 goal and added 3 assists through 2 games since our last update. His 4 points came during a 7-3 win over Havirov. Overall, the 5’10”, 196-lbs winger has played 40 games in the Czech Extraliga. He has 18 points (6-12-18), and is -7 with 28 minutes in penalties.

The versatile forward also played for the Czech Republic during the recent World Junior Championship. He played center on a line with Edmonton draft pick Ales Hemsky. He was second on the team in scoring with 7 points (3-4-7) through 7 games. The 19-year old was -1, and directed a team-best 24 shots on goal. He won 49 % of his face-offs, while taking the most draws of any pivot on the Czech team. Plekanec also played on last year’s gold medal winning squad, where he scored 1 goal while adding 1 assist through 7 tournament games.

Victor Ujcik -F (Drafted-01(9/266))

Slavia Praha’s Viktor Ujcik managed 4 points through 2 games since our last update. All 4 of his points came during a 7-2 win over Karlovy Vary. Overall, the 5’10”, 194-lbs winger has played 43 games. He has 34 points (19-15-34), and is -3 with 49 minutes in penalties. His point total is good enough for 20th place in league scoring.

Hab you Heard?

Kim Staal, the Habs’ 4th round pick in ’96 has 33 points (13-20-33) through 42 games with Modo of the Swedish Elite League. He’s +11 with 16 minutes in penalties, and 2 of his goals were scored on the powerplay. He’s 3rd on his team in scoring, and sits in 12th place among the league’s top-scorers. The 23-year-old has points in 13 of Modo’s last 15 games.

Niklas Anger, the Habs’ 5th round pick in ’95 has scored 13 points through his last 10 games. The 24-year-old right winger has vaulted into first place among AIK scorers, and is now 18th overall in Swedish Elite League scoring. He has 30 points (11-19-30) through 43 games, and is -13 with 16 minutes in penalties. Anger is statistically the Habs’ most improved prospect, as he’s improved his offensive numbers substantially this season.

-Ilkka Mikkola, the Habs’ 3rd round pick in ’97 has 3 points (2-1-3) through 41 games with Jokerit of the Finnish Elite League. He is +4 with 12 minutes in penalties.

-Evan Lindsay has a 13-11-2 record though 28 games with Mississippi of the ECHL. The Habs’ fourth round pick in ’99 has a 3.38 GAA, and a solid .906 save percentage. Vadim Tarasov’s return to Québec has forced the Citadelles to send Luc Belanger to Mississippi. This will likely have a direct effect on Lindsay’s playing time.
