Devils hire Constantine; Former Penguins coach leaves Forge, replaces fired
Robinson

The Island Sports Center and the Pittsburgh Forge are in the market for a
new boss as Kevin Constantine left his roles as center CEO-president and
Pittsburgh Forge general manager to return to the NHL as the New Jersey
Devils’ new coach. He was beneficial in bringing a junior-A hockey team to
the area and building the franchise. Constantine came up with the idea to
join the North American Hockey League, stocking the expansion team with
nearly a dozen local players and establishing a winning system. He hired
coach Chris Imes and assistant John Becanic. Then he joined them and the
players on the ice in the season’s early months, helping to jump-start a
Forge team that currently stands second in the NAHL with a 26-11-2 record.

FORGE NOTCHES 5-3 TRIUMPH OVER PRIDE

NEVILLE ISLAND (Thursday, January 24, 2002) —
Daniel Schildorfer and Andy
Brandt scored two goals each to lead the Pittsburgh Forge Junior A hockey
club to a 5-3 win over the Capital Centre Pride tonight at the Island Sports
Center on Neville Island. The Forge is now 7-2 in the month of January and
26-10-2 overall, which is the second-best mark in the entire North American
Hockey League.
The game was tied 1-1 after the first period as the teams exchanged power
play goals. Joey Olson scored for Capital Centre at the 8:18 mark and
Schildorfer got the equalizer for Pittsburgh at 9:48. The Forge built a 3-1
lead in the second period on a goal by Mike Handza and Schildorfer’s second
tally of the game, but Michal Piotrowski of the Pride scored twice before
the end of the period to tie the contest at 3-3.

Schildorfer’s second goal
came on a breakaway in a shorthanded situation. Brandt, who now has 16 goals
on the season, picked up both of his tallies in the decisive third period.
The first came at the 4:15 mark, and the second was an empty netter at
19:19. Handza had a goal and two assists in the contest. The former
Pittsburgh Amateur Penguins Junior B player now leads the Forge with 36
points (17 goals and 19 assists). Pittsburgh’s Tim Heneroty stopped 26 of
the 29 shots he faced and now leads all NAHL goaltenders with 24 victories.

FORMER AMATEUR PENGUIN BAUER SIGNS WITH FORGE

The Forge Junior A team signed defenseman Randy Bauer of Pine-Richland to a
tender to play for the North American Hockey League team in the 2002-03
season. Bauer played two games for the Forge this season and currently plays
on the Hornet Midget Major team. Bauer is a product of the Pittsburgh
Amateur Penguins organization playing Squirts through Midget Minor in the
organization. The last 2 years he has played for the Penguin Jr. B squad. He
is committed to play Division I hockey for the Air Force Academy in 2003-04.
I’m excited about having a chance to play for the Forge next season,” Bauer
said. “Being able to stay here in Pittsburgh and play top-level Junior A
hockey is going to be great.”

Whats coming up: The Forge will host the Pride again tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets for the game — and all remaining Pittsburgh Forge home games — are
available by calling (412) 269-4478 or visiting the Island Sports Center.
