TRI-CITY’S ERIC JOHANSSON IS THE CHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

The CHL Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 3, 2002 is forward Eric
Johansson of the Tri-City Americans.

Johansson, 20, picked up 11 points in four league games this week, including
four goals. His goals included one power play marker, one shorthanded goal
and one game-winning goal as Tri-City managed a 2-1-1 record for the week
(details below).

Johansson beat out the two other CHL league winners for the week ending Feb.
3 to become the third WHL winner of the CHL award in five weeks. Greg
Chambers of the Peterborough Petes was the Ontario Hockey League Player of
the Week while Dominic Noel of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles (Offensive)
and Marc-Andre Fleury (Defensive), also of Cape Breton, were the Quebec
Major Junior Hockey League winners.

The CHL Player of the Week is selected from among the three leagues’
nominees and announced in Tuesday’s editions of the CHL Daily News. The CHL
Player of the Month for January will be announced in Wednesday’s CHL Daily
News.

WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE

There are three games in the WHL on Tuesday night. Regina (8) plays at
Brandon, Lethbridge is at Medicine Hat and Prince George visits Tri-City.

There was one re-scheduled game in the WHL on Monday night as Swift Current
(6) beat Calgary 7-3.

At Swift Current, Brent Twordik had three goals and two assists to lead the
Broncos to their big win over the Hitmen. Ben Ondrus added one goal and four
assists for the winners while Tyler Beechey scored his 34th goal of the
season for Calgary. Jeff Harvey made 31 saves in goal for Swift Current.

The Husky WHL Player of the Week is forward Eric Johansson of the Tri-City
Americans, who also earns the CHL Player of the Week Award.

In four games last week, Johansson had 11 points, including four goals and
seven assists. His totals included a power play goal, a shorthanded goal and
a game-winning goal.

Johansson started his big week with two goals and two assists during a 9-2
in over the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds last Tuesday night. He followed
that up with two goals and one assist in a 4-4 tie the next night in
Seattle.

On Feb. 1, he had one assist in a 6-5 loss to the Giants in Vancouver but
finished the week with a flourish, picking up three assists in a 7-1 win
over the Giants the next night at Tri-City.

Johansson is a 20-year-old native of Edmonton, Alberta, who was drafted by
the Minnesota Wild in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.

ONTARIO HOCKEY LEAGUE

There are no games in the OHL on Tuesday night.

On Monday night in the OHL, there was one re-scheduled game as Sault Ste.
Marie (9) blasted Mississauga 8-3.

At Sault Ste. Marie, Trevor Daley had one goal and four assists for the
winners, while Jeff Richards and Brent Kelly both added two goals and one
assist. Daniel Sisca had one goal and one assist for the IceDogs.

The OHL Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 3 is right winger Greg
Chambers of the Peterborough Petes.

Chambers appeared in three games this past week and fired five goals and
four assists, helping the Petes to post a 2-1-0 record.

The 19-year-old Toronto native opened the week with a two goal, two assist
effort as the Petes defeated the visiting Guelph Storm 8-3 on Jan. 31. He
also scored two goals and had two assists in a 7-0 win over the Kingston
Frontenacs Feb. 2 and added one goal in Peterborough’s 9-7 loss to Ottawa on
Feb. 1.

Chambers was not drafted in the OHL and despite that has become the Petes
leading scorer this season with 68 points in 52 games.

QUEBEC MAJOR JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE

There is one game in the QMJHL on Tuesday night at Rouyn-Noranda travels to
Val-d’Or to meet the Foreurs.

There were no games in the QMJHL on Monday night.

Two members of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles are the Quebec Major Junior
Hockey League’s Players of the week for the week ending Feb. 3.

Centre Dominic Noel was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Week
after picking up nine points, five goals and four assists, in three league
games last week.

Noel started the week by picking up an assist in a 2-2 tie at Halifax Jan.
28. He followed that up by picking up his first hat trick of the season Feb.
1 in a 4-2 win over Baie-Comeau and completed the big week with a two goal,
three assist performance in Cape Breton’s 7-3 win over Chicoutimi.

The Lameque, New Brunswick native was also plus two for the week and was
instrumental in the Screaming Eagles picking up five out of a possible six
points.

His teammate Marc-Andre Fleury was named QMJHL Defensive Player of the Week
after an outstanding effort all week in goal while posting a 2-0-1 record.

The 17-year-old native of Sorel, Quebec posted a 2.27 goals against average
and a sparkling .944 save percentage in three league games.

He was brilliant against Halifax, stopping 46 of 48 shots in the 2-2 tie. He
followed that up by making 34 saves in the win over Baie-Comeau and he
recorded another 39 saves in the win over Chicoutimi.

It was the second time this season Fleury won QMJHL Defensive Player of the
Week honours.
