Third Period rally lift Forge over Team USA

Forge 5 USA 2 :
NEVILLE ISLAND (March 16, 2002) — Three goals during a five-minute span of
the third period lifted the Pittsburgh Forge Junior A hockey club to a 5-2
victory over the USA National Team. The Forge, which has already clinched a
playoff spot, improved its record to 33-14-3. Pittsburgh remains in second
place in the Eastern Division of the North American Hockey League with 69
points. The top four teams in each division will qualify for post-season
play. Pittsburgh’s game-winning rally began when Josh Coyle scored an
unassisted goal at the 5:24 mark of the final period to break a 2-2 tie.
Andy Brandt’s goal at 8:54 made it 4-2, and Chris Lawrence picked up the
final tally of the evening at 9:48. Brandt now has 23 goals on the season,
and leads the team in that department. Back-up goaltender Peter Mannino made
his fifth start of the season for the Forge and raised his record to 3-2.
Pittsburgh failed to get on the scoreboard in the first period despite
out-shooting Team USA, 15-3.

The Forge finally broke the scoreless deadlock
at 3:47 of the second period when Gabe Rehak scored after taking in a
cross-ice pass from Lawrence. The lead didn’t last long, however, as James
Sharrow scored a power play goal for the visitors at the 8:31 mark. Team USA
went ahead 2-1 on an unassisted power play goal by T.J. Hensick at 14:04,
but Bernie Chmiel tied the game before the second period came to a close (at
the 18:27 mark), scoring just seconds after a Pittsburgh power play had
expired.

Whats coming up: Next weekend the Forge will play a home-and-home series
with the Cleveland Barons. The two teams will meet Friday, March 22 up in
Cleveland and then again on Saturday, March 23 (7:30pm) at the Island Sports
Center here in Pittsburgh. Four of the Pittsburgh’s six remaining regular
season games will be against the Barons. Cleveland entered tonight’s action
in third place in the Nail’s Eastern Division, just two points behind the
Forge.
