CHL Conference Finals Set to Begin

The three Canadian Hockey League leagues are down to their Conference championships series, with just 12 teams left with a chance to join the host Guelph Storm at the 2002 MasterCard Memorial Cup, to be held May 18-26, 2002.

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, the Ontario Hockey League and the Western Hockey League all announced their conference championship schedules today. The full schedules are listed below for all three leagues.

Among the teams still alive for a MasterCard Memorial Cup berth are the defending champion Red Deer Rebels (1) of the WHL, the No. 2 ranked Acadie-Bathurst Titan of the QMJHL and the Toronto St. Michael’s Majors (6), the highest ranked team remaining from the OHL.

Four top 10 teams have already been eliminated – the Plymouth Whalers (3) of the OHL, the Swift Current Broncos (4) of the WHL, the Regina Pats (9) of the WHL and the Halifax Mooseheads (10) of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

In each edition of the CHL Daily News (Monday through Friday) right up until the conclusion of the CHL playoffs, the playoff results of all three CHL leagues will be included.

Wrap-ups from all of the games are included daily, along with that day’s schedule of games.

Starting April 18, a special MasterCard Memorial Cup section will also be available at the official website of the CHL, www.chl.ca.

ONTARIO HOCKEY LEAGUE

There was one game in the OHL playoffs Monday night as the Barrie Colts defeated the Belleville Bulls 3-2 in overtime to win that best-of-seven second round series 4-2.

At Barrie, Erik Reitz scored at 2:19 of overtime to give the Colts the series win. Reitz also had one assist, while Blaine Down and Mark Langdon also had one goal and one assist as the Colts came back from a 2-0 deficit again to win the game.

Matthew Stajan had one goal and one assist for the Bulls, who were out-shot 38-28. Michael Mole made 35 saves in goal for the Bulls, while David Chant stopped 26 shots form the winners.

QUEBEC MAJOR JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE

There was one playoff game in the QMJHL Monday night as the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles defeated the Halifax Moosheads 6-4 to win that series four games to two.

At Cape Breton, Dominic Noel had two goals and one assist to lead the winners to victory. Pierre-Luc Laprise added one goal and two assists for Cape breton, while Robbie Sutherland scored once and added one assist for Halifax.
