New Jersey Devils Prospect Overview for 2001/02

By Jared Ramsden

Although the Albany River Rats struggled to the worst record in the AHL, it was a good learning experience for some of the Devils prospects on the farm. Do remember that is was a very young squad in Albany, and the numbers may not speak in terms of how they developed through out the season. A good majority of the Rat players were in their first pro seasons. The goaltenders, Ari Ahonen and Scott Clemmensen, most nights faced upwards of 30+ shots a game and had numbers (aside from wins) that were quite respectable. The development of NCAA and CHL prospects was very positive this season, especially the likes of U of Minnesota d-man Paul Martin and Prince Albert center Igor Pohanka. But the most positive impacts in the prospect pipeline were the seasons the two top forwards in the organization had, with Albany and New Jersey. Christian Berglund and Brian Gionta showed very positive signs, most notably in the playoffs with the big club, that they are NHL ready.
