ST LOUIS - The St. Louis Blues reported today that the Blues have signed Christian Backman, their 3rd European prospect of the summer. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Backman, 22, was selected by the Blues in the 1st round of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. Since being drafted he has been playing in the Swedish Elite League for Vastra Frolunda HC. The past two offseasons Blues management tried unsuccessfully to lure Backman from Europe.

“I have always been dreaming about the NHL, but always said that I wouldn't move over for a lousy deal. But this deal was a lot better than I had expected, so the decision was easy,” Backman told Swedish newspaper, Sportbladet.

Last season, the Swedish defenseman scored 7 goals and 11 points in 44 games.
