One of the standouts on this first day of practices was the play of someone who is seen to e somewhat of a sleeper pick to make the team, goaltender David Leneveu. The Phoenix Coyotes draft pick, and Cornell University star, displays a great attitude when faced with his goal of making the club. When praised for his play, the amicable LeNeveu laughed and replied, “I am not taking things too seriously, just trying to shake off the cobwebs a bit and play as best I can.”
Throughout the next ten days the players will be subject to more practices in combination with four red and white games. When they are not on the ice, they will be participating in activities designed to help them bond as a team while familiarizing them with the Halifax area. This includes staying in residence together at St. Mary’s University, a trip to Lawrencetown Beach across the bridge in Dartmouth, and a lobster dinner, which is a custom of the Maritime Provinces. It is hoped that taking some of the mystery out of the region will give them an advantage come December 26th, when Canada will take on Sweden in its first round robin match-up.
NOTES: Carlo Colaiacovo and Barry Brust both left the ice Sunday after an on-ice collision during a drill. Brust was the only one to return…
St.Mary’s University coach Trevor Steinberg as well as Dalhousie University coach Fabian Joseph were brought in this weekend as ‘special coaches’…
Out of the three injured players to be invited, only the WHL’s Matthew Spiller made the trip East, as he is still capable of participating in not contact skating. Among 2003 draft eligible players in camp are Eric Staal, Chris St. Jacques, and Maxime Fortunus.
