Canada’s 2003 Junior Team Camp Review

Day 1 –

Team Canada began its journey to the 2003 World Junior Hockey Championships in Halifax. As 46 of the top junior stars in Canada got together for a 10 day camp at the Halifax Metro Centre.

After the players checked in with medicals and such. The players were divided into two groups and top to the ice in two separate light practices to get a quick feel for the ice.

Day 2 –

Red and White teams skated in morning practices getting more use to the ice and there surroundings.

Coaches Marc Habscheid, Mario Durocher & Mike Kelly along with help from Dalhousie University coach Fabian Joseph and St.Mary’s University coach Trevor Steinberg lead the teams through the days drills.

With the rest of the day spend off the ice Team Canada spent the afternoon at the MicMac Rowing Club on Lake Banook on the outskirts of Halifax.

Day 3 –

Another day of morning drills preparing the teams for 4 intersquad games which begin on Day 4.

Day 4 –

After the light morning skate for both squads the teams took to the ice later in the day for the first of four intersquad games.

Team White took game #1 by a score of 5-4 infront of 3172 fans at the Metro Centre.

Brandon Segal of the Calgary Hitmen had 2 goals in the game for Team Red. Stephen Weiss and Gregory Campbell notched the other 2 goal for Team Red. While Team White got there 5 goals from Pierre-Marc Bouchard, Colt King, Drew Fata, Eric Staal & Chris St-Jacques.

Teams take to the ice again on day 5 for the second of four intersquad games.

Day 5 –

Teams once again took to the ice for there second of four intersquad games after the light morning practice.

The teams played to a 7-7 tie infront of 2845 fans, sending the game into a shootout which seen #1 Overall draft pick Rick Nash put the puck by Team White goalie Barry Brust to give his Team Red the win in the shootout. Also scoring for the Red Team was Derek Roy. Team White was held scoreless in the shootout.

During regulation played Team Red got goals from Owen Fussy (2), Brooks Laich, Nicolas Corbeil, Shawn Collymore, Cole Jarrett and Derek Roy. Replying for Team White was Jason Spezza (2), Daniel Paille (2), Chris St-Jacques, Pierre-Marc Bouchard and Scottie Upshall.

Team Red Goalie David LeNeveu of Cornell University played a out standing game stopping 20 of the 22 shots he faced in his half of the game and kept the door closed in the shootout.

Day 6 –

A day off of all on ice activity for Team Canada.

Day 7 –

In the morning the two teams played 30 minutes of 4 on 4 and 30 minutes of 3 on 3. With the White squad coming out of this 60 minute non stop game by a final score of 13-12.

Later in the day the teams took to the ice to take part in a Skills Competition infront of over 2000 fans.

– FASTEST LAP : Jay Bouwmesster (Team Red)
– PUCK CONTROL RELAY : Team White wins hands down
– HARDEST SHOT : Jordin Tootoo (Team White) 97 MPH over Matt Spiller (Team Red) 95 MPH
– 3 ON 0 : Team White, To go out infront 30-10 in points.

– TEAM SHOWDOWN : Team Red, Shawn Collymore defeated Maxime Talbot in the final.
– FINAL SHOWDOWN : Team Red, Kyle Wellwood score the clincher to tie up the competition 30-30 and senc it to a shootout.
– SHOOTOUT : Duncan Milroy scored the winner to give Team Red the come from behind win in the Skills Competition.

Day 8 –

The players were back in game action on day 8 as the Red and White teams took to the game for game #3 infront of 4549 fans in Halifax.

Team Red took a quick 4-0 lead in the second period with goals coming from Gregory Campbell, Duncan Milroy, Brendan Bell and Jay Bouwmesster. Team White finally got on the board mid way into the second period with a goal from Doug Lynch.

Team White seemed to wake up early in the third period with two quick goals coming from Eric Staal and Nathan Paetsch to cut team reds lead to 4-3. But late in the final period Team Red took the 5-3 lead with a goal from Shawn Collymore and held on to win the game by a final of 5-3. Team Red now leads the 4 game series 2-1 with the final game set to go on day 10.

Day 9 –

Day 9 was a easy day for Team Canada after teams took part on morning skates the rest of the was spent following the Under 18 Team in the Gold Medal Game at the Eight Nations and touring the city.

Day 10 –

On the final day of camp, Team Canada took to the ice for one final morning practice to prepare for there final intersquad game later that day.

In the final Red/White game, Team Red came out on top 9-7 lead by Brandon Segal with four goals. Also scoring for Team Red was Stephen Weiss, Rick Nash (2), Duncan Keith and Owen Fussey.

Team White got goals from Jason Spezza, Scottie Upshall, Daniel Paille, Boyd Gordon, Jordin Tootoo, Maxime Talbot and Joel Steep.

At the end of the game players gathered at center ice to wave goodbye to the fans and pose for a team photo.
