NAHL Finalist FORGE gearing up for 2002/2003
The Pittsburgh Forge is winding up pre-season camp at Island Sports. Tomorrow morning they leave for Lansing, Michigan and the start of the NAHL season in the Capital Centre tournament. The Forge will face the Danville Wings on Friday night, the Texas Tornado on Saturday afternoon, then the Springfield Junior Blues on Sunday afternoon. The Forge have completed two weeks of training under the direction of their new head coach John Becanic. John Becanic had been promoted to head coach replacing Chris Imes, who resigned in order to accept a professional coaching job in Europe.
Imes has been named head coach of the Olimpija Green Dragons of the International Hockey League, a team located in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Becanic served as assistant coach of the Forge under Imes during the team’s inaugural 2001-2002 season. Becanic — a native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario — spent the previous five years as head coach and director of hockey operations for the Bismarck Bobcats of the Junior-A America West Hockey League, and compiled a 121-93-22 record. His resume also includes a two-year stint with the Soo Greyhounds of the Major Junior Ontario Hockey League, a team that won the Memorial Cup Championship in 1993. Pittsburgh’s first home games at the Island Sports Center will be Friday and Saturday, September 13-14 vs. defending NAHL and national champion Detroit Compuware.
CAPTAINS NAMED: The Pittsburgh Forge has named forward Andy Brandt captain for the 2002-2003 season. Pittsburgh natives defensemen Dylan Reese and Denis Kirstein have been appointed alternate captains.

Amateur Penguins Junior B’s get off to a good start:
Coach Chris Bise took the 2002/2003 version of the Junior B Pittsburgh Amateur Penguins to Boston for the Eastern Junior League (Junior A) Labor Day pre – season tournament and came out with a more than respectable 3-1 record. The Pens defeated the South Shore Raiders (a team of primarily D3 College players), the Northeast Huskies (Junior A Players), and the Bridgewater Bandits (Junior A in the EJHL). Their only loss of the weekend came in the semi-finals to the Boston Junior Bruins. Coach Bise stated that this years group has 3-5 legitimate D1 prospects.
