Hurricanes Pick Up D-man

The Hurricanes added yet another solid defender to their blueline by picking up Andy Thompson from the Kootenay Ice. Thomson who left the Ice during their playoff run last fall had asked to be traded and eventually got his wish. Thomspon joins the Canes in exchange for Lethbridge's first and third round picks in the 2003 Bantam Draft. He will fit in nicely with the Canes and should be a top four blueliner. Thomspon was drafted 7th overall in the 99 Bantam draft by the Ice and had developed into one of the their best players. The newest Cane plays a physical amassing 329 PIM's along with 38 points in 129 games for the Ice over the past three seasons. He was projected to go in the top three rounds of the 2002 NHL Draft but after the left the Ice in the playoffs his stock fell and he went undrafted. If he could put together a solid year with the Canes he will definetly get a call from an NHL club. Assuming Thompson continues to play the way he did in Kootenay he will be a fan favourite and top defender in Lethbridge in no time. Dustin Nielson Lethbridge
