The Detroit Red Wings beat the St. Louis Blues with a final score of five to two.
All of the first period scoring went to Detroit. James Cuddihy scored the first and last goal of the period. Matt Ellis assisted on his first goal and Henrik Zetterberg and Tomas Kopecky assisted on his second goal.
Thatcher Bell scored the second goal for Detroit on a five-on-three power play advantage with assists from Kopecky and Danny Groulx. D.J. King and Doug MacIver were both in the penalty box for holding and high sticking.
The third goal was scored by Tomas Fleischmann when he put the puck behing Marc-Andre LeClerc and had assists from Chad LaRose and Cuddihy.
Joel Ward scored Detroit’s last goal with thirty seconds left in the second period. Ellis and Aaron Van Leusen assisted on the goal.
St. Louis finally got on the board with eight seconds left in the second period. Robert Snowball finally found a way to get the puck past Nick Pannoni. Grant Jacobsen and Adam STurgeon had the assists.
Ellis was in the penalty box when Andrei Mikhnov scored the only third period goal on the power play. Tyler Beechey and Christian Backman assisted on the goal.
Brett Scheffelmaier received a game misconduct after his second fight. His first was with Darryl Bootland in the second period. His second was against Joel Ward in the third.
The Washington Capitals beat the Atlanta Flames six-to-five in overtime.
The first goal of the game went to Washington when Brian Sutherby scored on the power play. Atlanta’s Paul Flache was serving a penalty for slashing. Graham Mink and Owen Fussey assisted on the goal.
Ben Ondrus tied the game up before the first period ended with an assist from Josh Gratton.
Washington was up by one at the end of the second period after scoring three goals. Chris Corrinet, Warren Peters, a shorthanded goal, and Jason Maleyko scored for Washington in the second. Atlanta’s goals came from Charles Linglet and Flache had a power play goal.
Washington’s Corrinet then scored the first goal in the third period giving them a two goal lead but Atlanta came back scoring two goals thirty-four seconds apart. Karl Strewart’s came on the power play and John Hecimovic scored the other at even strength to tie the game back up.
The game went to overtime and with forty-one seconds left in overtime Jakub Cutta scored for Washington.
