Capitals Waiver Draft

Washington, D.C. – As the waiver draft approaches, there remains many question marks. Here is a run down of what we may see.

Last season, GM George McPhee protected the following players….

Nikolishin F
Witt D
Johansson D
Simon F
Zubrus F
Jagr F
Halpern F
Klee D
Bondra F
Gonchar D
Konowalchuk F
Cote D
Billington G
Kolzig G

and the since departed…

Oates F
Reekie D
Sacco F
Zettler D
Linden F
Dahlen F

This leaves at least 6 positions open to fill…(4 Forwards, 2 Defensemen…or any variation of the 6).

Forwards

First, you would have to assume that Lang F, will be protected. The same goes for Miller F, although he was NOT protected last season.

The question remains, who will be the final forwards protected, and or will the Caps protect one or two or three additional defensemen.

Here is how I see it, Glen Metropolit was NOT protected last waiver draft, as well as Colin Forbes, Trent Whitfield, Peter Ferraro, and Chris Ferraro. Ivan Ciernik WAS, with Ottawa. Out of the defensemen, Jason Doig was NOT protected last season, as well as Todd Rohloff, and Dean Melanson.

TOUGH CALL. I expect the Caps will protect both Glen Metropolit and Ivan Ciernik. But, this will only allow for the Caps to protect three more players (defensemen or forwards). Who will the Caps protect out of Jason Doig, Todd Rohloff, Peter Ferraro, Chris Ferraro, Trent Whitfield, Colin Forbes, Dean Melanson???

ALSO, the Caps can only protect two goalies. Therefore…Charpentier may be left out unprotected, unless George McPhee decides to go the other way and leave Billington unprotected.

Seth’ prediction of protected players:

Lang F
Nikolishin F
Witt D
Johansson D
Simon F
Zubrus F
Jagr F
Halpern F
Klee D
Bondra F
Gonchar D
Konowalchuk F
Cote D
Ciernik F
Metropolit F
Doig D
Rohloff D
P. Ferraro F
Kolzig G
Billington G

un-protected players:

Melanson D
Whitfield F
Forbes F
C. Ferraro F
Charpentier G
