Washington Capitals Prospect Report

By pbadmin

Welcome to the first of my bi-weekly reports on the Washington Capitals prospects. In addition to giving you up-to-date statistics on all of the players on the top-fifty list, I will let you know what’s going on with the Portland Pirates and all of the latest news.

The World Junior Championships ended recently, and the Capitals had three players involved. Forward Michal Sivek played for the Gold Medal winning Czech Republic. He scored three goals and six points in seven games, and collected a +4 rating. Goaltender Rastislav Stana was a member of the disappointing Slovakian team. He played in four of their seven games, and posted a 2.35 goals-against average (7th in the tournament) and a .927 save percentage (6th in the tornament). Defenseman Igor Shadilov earned a Silver Medal with the Russian team. He played in seven games, scoring one goal and sporting a +7, which was twelfth best in the tournament.

The AHL’s Portland Pirates are currently 24-12-8, totalling 56 points. This puts them first in the New England Division and Eastern Conference. They are second overall in the league behind Kentucky (San Jose) who have 60 points, but two games in hand. There are three Pirates who have been selected to the AHL All-Star game. Goaltender Martin Brochu will play for the Canadian team, while forwards Miika Elomo and Alexandre Volchkov will play for PlanetUSA. The Pirates are still missing the services of winger Jeff Toms, who is enjoying an extended stay in the NHL. They also have four prospects playing for the ECHL’s Hampton Roads Admirals: forwards Mike Omicioli and Mike Siklenka, as well as defensemen Gerad Adams and Dean Stork – who are all in their first pro season.

Misc. Notes: At the WHL trading deadline, two Capitals prospects changed teams. Forward Todd Hornung, who is yet to play his first game this season, was dealt from Lethbridge to Swift Current for a 2001 draft pick. He should be returning to action in about three to four weeks, just in time for the playoffs. Moose Jaw traded goaltender Rastislav Stana to the number-one ranked Calgary Hitmen in a four player deal. After almost a month off, Moscow Dyanmo is getting back down to business. Defensemen Oleg Orehovsky and Igor Shadilov want to build on their good first halves, and Shadilov in particular wants to continue his success from the WJC.

A++ Players – performing above and beyond the call of duty.
