Washington Capitals Prospect Report

By Jeff Charlesworth
Hello and welcome to the latest Capitals Prospect Update. In addition to all the news and
notes, I will give you up-to-date stats on all of the players on the top 50 list.

The Portland Pirates continued to slide after sitting atop the AHL for a couple of months.
Their record stands at 40-20-9 (90 pts.) and puts them 4 points behind Hartford (N.Y.R.) in the
divisional race and for the overall lead. The Pirates have clinched a playoff spot however, and
will start the post season in a couple of weeks. Leading scorer Glen Metropolit is back with
the Capitals, but may be back down to the AHL for the playoffs. The Pirates have six players
assigned to Hampton Roads (ECHL): Forwards Mike Omicioli and Mike Siklenka, Defensemen Gerad
Adams, Steve Shirreffs and Dean Sork, and Goaltender Curtis Cruickshank – who are all in their
first professional season.

The season is over for some of the Capitals’ North American prospects, as the College league
playoffs have finished. Princeton (Chris Corrinet) and Harvard (Kyle Clark) lost in the first
round of the ECAC playoffs. In the Hockey East playoffs, Providence (Michael Farrell) lost in
the first round and Boston College (Kevin Caulfield) made it to the finals but lost to Maine.
Finally, Minnesota (Erik Wendell) lost in the semi-finals of the WCHA tournament. In the OHL,
London (Krys Barch) missed the post-season, losing the last playoff berth to Guelph (Charlie
Stephens), who will have a tough test in the first round against top-seeded Plymouth.

The WHL playoffs will be of interest to Capitals fans, as all eleven of the Caps WHL prospects
made it to the post-season. As a matter of fact, only one first round match-up does not have a
Capitals prospect in it. Tri-City (Jomar Cruz & Blake Evans) will take on Spokane (Roman
Tvrdon) while Swift Current (Todd Hornung) will battle Red Deer (Ross Lupaschuk). In other
first round series: Kelowna (David Johansson & Nolan Yonkman) will play Prince George, Seattle
(Nathan Forster) will play Kamloops, Calgary (Kris Beech & Rastislav Stana) will play Moose
Jaw, and Prince Albert (Michal Sivek) will play Kootenay.

Misc. Notes: The Capitals signed defensemen Michael Farrell from Providence College on the
weekend. This will be the first of many signings for the Caps as they try to prevent their 1998
draftees from re-entering the 2000 entry draft. He will report to Portland (AHL), but may not
see much action with the Pirates this season.

A++ players: players performing above and beyond the call of duty.

5. Jason Shmyr: He has been a valuable member of the strong Portland team.

4. Gerad Adams: Has shown a lot in his rookie year.

3. Chris Corrinet: Great season, Caps hoping for more.

2. Blake Evans: Led Tri-City in scoring this year.

1. Kris Beech: Led all Capitals prospects in scoring this season.

Ones to Watch: players you’ll be hearing about very soon.

5. Sebastien Charpentier: Should play an important role leading up to the playoffs.

4. Dean Sork: Should move up to the AHL full-time next year.

3. Matthew Herr: He is ready for the NHL in 2000-01.

2. Mike Farrell: Just signed his first professional contract.

1. Todd Hornung: Swift Current acquired him for a run at the WHL title.

Disappointments: players who aren’t living up to expectations.

5. J.F. Fortin: Poor numbers in rookie year.

4. Kyle Clark: Three points is not enough to get noticed.

3. Henrik Petre: -9 for the season is not pretty.

2. Scott Buhler: Cut loose from Quad City (UHL).

1. Trevor Halverson: Will miss the entire season with a concussion.
