The Ducks are in the playoffs for the third time in their 10 year history. Let’s have a look at the rookies on their roster and the prospects in the system.
The Ducks could have up to 8 rookies on their roster going into the Western Conference quarter-final matchup against the Detroit Red Wings. They already have Stanislav Chistov, Alexei Smirnov, Kurt Sauer, Martin Gerber and Cam Severson on their roster and are expected to call up Ilya Bryzgalov, Jonathan Hedstrom and Mark Popovic before the puck drops in Motor City. The Cincinnati Mighty Ducks aren’t in the AHL playoffs, therefore they are giving their top players (the Ducks’ top prospects) to Anaheim to take advantage of the no roster limit.
Also the Cincy Ducks signed prospect Brian Lee to a tryout contract after Lee’s season with the OHL’s Erie Otters came to an end. Lee got to squeeze in 6 games with the Baby Ducks at the end of the season and got a goal and 4 penalty minutes.
Anaheim recently signed Hobey Baker finalist, Chris Kunitz of Ferri State University to a 2 year contract. Kunitz, an undrafted left winger, was second in NCAA scoring with 35 goals and 44 assists in 42 games. He’ll be joining the Ducks at training camp this fall. Look for a profile on him soon.
