Flyers Prospects on Winning Sides in QMJHL, WHL Semi-Final Openers

Philadelphia Flyers prospect Mathieu Brunelle tallied his 13th goal of the QMJHL playoffs as Hull crushed Val D’Or by a 6-1 count in Game 2 of the QMJHL LeBel Conference finals. Brunelle’s goal 15 seconds into the second period gave Hull a 2-0 lead. The floodgates opened late in the second and third periods. The biggest stars for Hull in this game were Jean-Michel Doust (hat trick and 2 assists) and leading playoff point-getter Maxime Talbot (4 assists). Brunelle finished with 4 shots on goal. In Game One, Brunelle was named the #1 star, scoring two goals and adding an assist as Hull downed Val D’OR 6-2. Game 3 is on Monday.

Over in the Dilio Conference, Baie Comeau got past Halifax 3-2 in their series opener. Petr Preucil scored twice for the Drakkar. Enforcer Thierry Douville, a Flyers draft pick, sat out the first match of his two game suspension for a stick swinging incident in Game 5 of the conference semi-finals. Game two will be played today.

Meanwhile, out west in the opener of the WHL’s Eastern Conference finals, Red Deer put a 5-1 hurting on Brandon in a penalty-filled contest. Flyers defensive prospect Jeff Woywitka was involved in a fight late in the first period, getting hit with the instigator penalty and a misconduct. Woywitka was out for Red Deer’s first goal of the game, an even strength goal. All other scoring was on the powerplay. Game two is today.
