Brunelle Leads Hull to Brink of QMJHL Finals

By Bill Meltzer

While all eyes in Philadelphia are concerned with the present, not the future, one of the Flyers prospects has quietly had a magical playoff run in junior hockey.

As the Flyers lost 2-1 in double overtime to the Toronto Maple Leafs to force a deciding 7th game of the Eastern Conference final series, Philadelphia prospect Mathieu Brunelle was helping his Hull Olympiques team get within a game of reaching the QMJHL finals.

Brunelle scored a goal and registered three assists, including the game winning goal, as Hull downed Val’D Or in a wild 6-5 overtime contest. For the second time in three tilts, Brunelle was named the number one star of the game. Brunelle, who has 26 points in 12 playoff games, leads all QMJHL playoff performers with 14 goals and a +21 rating.

Hull now has a commanding 3-0 lead in the LeBel Conference Finals. They will look to finish out the series at home tonight. The puck hits the ice at 7:30 pm. Meanwhile, over in the Dilio Conference finals, Baie Comeau has a 2-0 lead over Halifax. Game three is tonight. Enforcer Thierry Douville, a Flyer draftee, will return to the Drakkar lineup after serving a two game suspension.
