Coyotes draft review

By Russell Brooks

The Phoenix Coyotes drafted eight players in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, seven forwards, one defenseman, and no goalies.

3rd Round/ #77 overall
Tyler Redenbach (LW)
6-0, 195 lbs.
Shoots: L
Born: Sept. 25, 1984
Birthplace: Kamloops, British Columbia
Central Scouting Ranking: #73 North American Skater
2002-2003 Team: Swift Current (WHL)
Regular Season Stats: 17 G, 51 A, 68 PTS, 35 PIM, in 60 games

Notes: Shane Doan, who skates with Redenbach every summer, endorsed him to the scouting staff. Excellent vision of the ice around and in front of him. Above average speed and mobility. Needs to work on defensive coverage.

Redenback was invited to attend Canada’s National Junior team’s development camp in 2003. Has been used to quarterback the power play. Very strong on the penalty kill and is used in most special teams situations. Has the vision and smarts to become a quality second line playmaking winger.

3rd Round/ #80 overall
Dimitri Pestunov (C)
5-9, 196 lbs.
Shoots: L
Born: Jan. 22, 1985
Birthplace: Ust Kamenogorsk, KZ.
Central Scouting Ranking: #35 European Skater
2002-2003 Team: Magnitogorsk (Russian Elite League)
Regular Season Stats: 4 G, 0 A, 4 PTS, in 32 games

Notes: Small, but strong on his skates. Stays away from physical hockey. Good skater, with above average speed and acceleration. Above average puck handler with a strong, but average shot. Needs to work on defensive zone coverage. Sees the ice well and effectively uses his linemates. Good, precise passer.

His skills and hockey sense will have to improve if he wants a shot at the NHL.

4th Round/ #115 overall
Liam Lindstrom (C)
6-0, 189 lbs.
Shoots: L
Born: Jan. 12, 1985
Birthplace: Edmonton, Alberta
Central Scouting Ranking: #22 European Skater
2002-2003 Team: Mora (Swedish Elite League)
Regular Season Stats: 3 G, 7 A, 1O PTS, 57 PIM, in 20 games

Notes: A solid skater with nice balance. Possess terrific puckhandling skills and doesn’t hesitate to unleash his hard slap shot once he senses a scoring chance. His variety of shots is above average. Blessed with top-notch vision and hockey sense, Lindstrom is strong in his defensive zone. He is useful on both power play and penalty-killing units.

Godson to Managing Partner Wayne Gretzky. Also son of former Winnipeg Jet player Willy Lindstrom.

6th Round/ #178 overall
Ryan Gibbons (RW)
6-4, 210 lbs.
Shoots: R
Born: Jan. 1, 1985
Birthplace: Vancouver, British Columbia
Central Scouting Ranking: #126 North American Skater
2002-2003 Team: Seattle (WHL)
Regular Season Stats: 9 G, 6 A, 15 PTS, 91 PIM, in 67 games

Notes: Uses his size to his advantage. A heavy hitter, Gibbons is a freight train on the forecheck. A rather slow skater, Gibbons lacks the necessary speed and agility to get in on the forecheck quick enough to use his hitting ability on a frequent enough basis. A high-energy guy, Gibbons backs down from no one. Probably not much of a scorer, but has decent hands.

7th Round/ #208 overall
Randall Gelech (C/RW)
6-2, 206 lbs.
Shoots: R
Born: Feb. 2, 1984
Birthplace: Elfros, Saskatchewan
Central Scouting Ranking: #147 North American Skater
2002-2003 Team: Kelowna (WHL)
Regular Season Stats: 25 G, 20 A, 45 PTS, 93 PIM, in 67 games

Notes: Capable scorer who plays well in traffic and down low near the net. A prototypical-banging, mobile winger who plays even bigger then his frame. Surprisingly fast, Gelech has good acceleration and is very strong in puck pursuit. Achieves most of his successes through hard work and hustle. While forward speed is decent, Gelech lacks agility. Strong for his size and is solid on the forecheck.

Gelech was invited to attend Canada’s National Junior team’s development camp in 2003.

8th Round/ #242 overall
Eduard Lewandowski (F)
6-1, 205 lbs.
Shoots: L
Born: May 3, 1980
Birthplace: Krasnoturinsk, Russia
Central Scouting Ranking: N/A
2002-2003 Team: Koln (German Elite League)
Regular Season Stats: 6 G, 14 A, 20 PTS, 46 PIM in 46 games

Notes: Possibility of going to Springfield (AHL) next season.

9th Round/ #272 overall
Sean Sullivan (D)
6-0, 180 lbs.
Shoots: L
Born: March 29, 1984
Birthplace: Boston, Massachusetts
Central Scouting Ranking: N/A
2002-2003 Team: St. Sebastian’s (USHSE)
Regular Season Stats: 9 G, 30 A, 39 PTS, 59 PIM in 41 games

Notes: An overachiever with good skill. Strong for his size. Competitive and contributes nicely to transition game. Will attend Boston University next season as a freshman. Has great leadership qualities.

9th Round/ #290 overall
Loic Burkhalter (F)
6-0, 192 lbs.
Shoots: L
Born: Feb. 11, 1980
Birthplace: La Chaux De Fonds, Switzerland
Central Scouting Ranking: N/A
2002-2003 Team: Ambri (Swiss Elite League)
Regular Season Stats: 12 G, 22 A, 34 PTS, 42 PIM in 44 games

Notes: Pick acquired Sunday from Dallas for Coyotes’ eighth-round pick in 2004. A project who was injured most of last season, but has some intangibles to his game that Phoenix finds intriguing.
