Swedish Prospects 2004 - October Ranking

This is the Hockey's Future/Elite Prospects October ("Early Season") ranking of the draft eligible Swedish prospects. It has been compiled by Johan Nilsson and Anders Östberg. The next ranking will be posted in November.

Djurgården's Johannes Salmonsson maintains his position as the No. 1 ranked prospect. Salmonsson is currently the only 1986-born player that sees icetime in the Swedish Elite League. He has played convincingly in Djurgården and registered his first point. He had however a mediocre showing in the last U18-tournament but hopefully he has been inspired by his play in the SEL and produces more in the next tournament (in November).

MoDo's talented center Mattias Hellström drops four spots after having big problems scoring in the junior league. Hellström gets quality icetime at even strength as well as on the power play but has yet to produce. Defenseman Alexander Täng, unranked in the preliminary ranking posted in August, has made a huge climb and is now ranked eighth. Täng who was eligible to get drafted this past summer is dominating the Swedish U20-league. Elite Prospects has been deeply impressed by his outstanding play and feel he has the potential to move even further up. Täng will also most likely play for Sweden in the WJC.

Another new name to the list is HV71's highly-skilled goalie Magnus Åkerlund. Åkerlund is the most talented Swedish junior goalie in some years. He has posted very good numbers in the junior league and he could very well be the one that will replace Stefan Liv, when he moves over to Detroit.
