The Swedish WJC roster was announced today and it includes some surprises. Overall the squad looks stronger than last year. Obvious key players besides both goalies are Alexander Steen, Robert Nilsson, Tobias Enström and SEL rookie Johan Fransson. Those four will lead the team offensively and will see a lot of icetime on the power play.

Frölunda's talented youngster Loui Eriksson and Brynäs' sniper Nicklas Danielsson will also have some pressure on their shoulders when it comes to scoring, which has been a major concern for Sweden in previous tournaments. An interesting new player is Tri-City's Swedish WHLer Marcus Jonasén. Jonasén is the only player of really large stature (6'4", 225lbs) on the Swedish team and he has had a strong rookie season in the WHL.

Another player among forwards that can't go unnoticed is top prospect Johannes Salmonsson, born 1986 and eligible for the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Salmonsson has surprised everyone by becoming a regular with Djurgården in the Swedish Elite League and this will be a great oppurtunity for him to raise his stock for the draft. Salmonsson is actually not the only player born 1986 on the Swedish team. HV 71's goalie Magnus Åkerlund is the second one and also a player that could get drafted quite early in the draft next summer. Åkerlund has yet to play in the Elite league but he has been playing very convincing in the junior league.

Tobias Enström and Johan Fransson will be they key players on defense, but there are more interesting names. Alexander Täng has been a major factor in the Swedish junior league with Frölunda. He is a player with very strong overall skills and could become a big surprise in this tournament. From the 2nd-tier league Daniel Sondell, Björklöven, is a player to watch. A defenseman with very good offensive skills although his awareness in his own end is still somewhat questionable.

Henrik Blomqvist who plays with Växjö in the 2nd-tier league is a surprising pick seeing as he hasn't played with the U20-team this season. Blomqvist is "only" 5'11" but don't let his size fool you. He is a very tough and physical defenseman that will use his body at every given oppurtunity.

A preview of all the Swedish players will be posted before the tournament starts.
